About Our Opportunity


Under the direction of the Geomatics Program Coordinator at the Nova Scotia Geomatics Centre in Amherst, the Geographic Information System (GIS 1-2) Specialist is responsible for spatial data manipulation and analysis, development, maintenance and mapping of Government related datasets.  Maintenance of our foundational provincial datasets occur through various means such as interaction with source providers, referencing remotely sensed data (such as aerial photography and satellite imagery), digitizing source information, field work, ground truthing and GPS data.  The highly skilled, detail-oriented geomatics professional has technical knowledge of the latest GIS concepts and technologies, cartographic principles, research and development of new products, supporting current services, relational databases, geographic data analysis tools and methodologies. 

 

The Specialist is responsible for the following:

 

  • maintaining and enforcing GIS best practices
  • strict quality control standards
  • database management and maintenance
  • creating digital data and products for use including public dashboards
  • cartographic production
  • research and development of new products
  • ongoing support services including writing technical documentation
  • assists other municipal and provincial government departments with their spatial information requirements by providing technical support and training to end users and clients
  • fulfilling fieldwork requirements such as placing/retrieving ground control targets for annual acquisition of aerial photography
  • setup aerial photography blocks on Softcopy PC environment for viewing/inspecting stereo pairs of aerial photography using 3D GIS software.
  • assisting with outreach to end users of Govt’s Provincial LiDAR datasets, regarding data maintenance and future collection areas of interest

About You

 

The successful candidate must have graduated from an approved GIS technical school in the field of GIS and/or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant Geomatics field.

 

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and/or experience in the following:

  • experience of geographic information systems and related database applications
  • self-starter with a positive attitude who applies a regular application of independent, sound judgment to solve problems in relation to the quality assurance of the various geographic databases managed by our team
  • demonstrate effective interpersonal skills, good organizational and strong verbal and written communication skills
  • ability to exercise a logical approach to analyzing problems, interpreting client needs while building relationships
  • adapt to new methodologies and software applications, interaction with outside organizations and the public in a professional manner are required
  • work cooperatively and collectively in a team environment
  • attention to detail and good time management skills 
  • manage multiple tasks with changing priorities to meet deadline.

 

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

The following would be considered an asset:

  • Experience working with the Nova Scotia Civic Address File, Nova Scotia Topographic Database, Nova Scotia Hydrographic Network and or the Nova Scotia Road Network
  • Experience with the following languages: Structured Query Language (SQL), XML, and Python
  • Experience working with linear referencing systems
  • Experience with geocoding techniques

Working Conditions

 

Please note: field work is required for this position and it is assigned on a rotational basis.

Weekend work maybe required based on operational needs, though this is rare.

Salary Information


PR 01 - PR 10 

$1,488.35 - $2,588.45

Pay Grade:  PR 01 - PR 10  

Salary Range:  $1,488.35 - $2,588.45 Bi-Weekly
