About Us


Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job.


The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (TIR) manages 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4100 bridges, and 9 provincial ferries.  Our District Highway Operations Division plays a critical role in managing various programs, functions and activities throughout our province, including snow and ice control services, road maintenance and repair services, and approval of various permits.


About Our Opportunity


As the District Secretary, you provide a wide range of administrative support to Western District’s highway operations; contributing to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the District. You provide excellent client service to both the public and District staff. Daily, you will use your superb coordination skills to directly contribute to the overall success and organization of the District; including scheduling and organizing meetings, managing calendars, creating and managing various correspondence, maintaining office supplies and inventory, filing, and data entry in our SAP system.  You will utilize your excellent customer service skills when responding to public enquires by phone, email or in person; redirecting and recording information to ensure the appropriate contact is informed.


We operate in a fast pace environment with ever changing demands and strict deadlines, and we need your ability to multitask and deal with changing priorities to keep our team on track. We also require your high degree of confidentiality given the sensitivity of the information dealt with daily.


In this position, you will have opportunity to assist with special projects; providing you with an excellent opportunity to develop and enhance your skills.


About You


Successful completion of a one (1) year business/secretarial course and three (3) years related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.


You have proficiency in typing, are accurate in your work, and have excellent knowledge of spreadsheet software and creation, word processing, presentations, and email applications. You have a keen eye for detail and well-developed planning and organizational skills to assist with the efficient operation of our team. 


Familiarity with the terminology used in an Engineering/ Architectural environment is an asset.


As the ideal candidate, you possess problem solving ability, analyze, and present information in clear, concise manners.  Your exceptional communication skills will assist you when liaising with staff and responding to public inquiries both verbally and in writing.  You consistently maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service.


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.



Pay Grade:  CL 18  


Salary Range:  $1,510.00 - $1,689.48 Bi-Weekly


This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU).
