About Us

The Correctional Services division of the Department of Justice is responsible for the administration and operation of community and custody-based programs and services for adult offenders and young persons.

Within the Correctional Services core business area there are two programs: community corrections & correctional facilities. Each of these program areas is broken down into closely related activities that have a specific impact on the program's target group.

About Our Opportunity

Correctional Services requires a teacher to deliver educational programming at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility.  Under the supervision of the Deputy Superintendent and the Principal, as our teacher, you will complete educational assessments, prepare and deliver academic programs and assist with transition to community.  You will use your adaptability and curriculum knowledge to adjust to the varying needs of learners, differentiate instruction and collaborate effectively with others.  We will rely on your holistic approach in working with other professionals in the case management process of individuals in conflict with the law.  In this role, you will have ample opportunity for collaboration with community service providers.

About You

You possess a valid Nova Scotia Teaching License (TC 5 or ITC) plus experience working with at-risk populations. Experience teaching core subject areas, and familiarity with GED, Adult Learning Program, and Nova Scotia Community College is essential.  Experience in working in a correctional setting, transition planning and awareness of community employment supports would be considered an asset.

Our successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to engage and communicate ideas and information to learners, some of whom have learning difficulties or are not highly motivated.  Your knowledge of assessment, establishing academic and behavior goals, differentiated instruction, and classroom management must also be demonstrated.  You function successfully as a member of a team, but you also work well in an independent and self-directed manner.  Your initiative and motivation are important qualities, as is the ability to stay organized.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Other Considerations

To ensure cultural background of the offender population is reflected in staffing at Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility this posting is restricted to Aboriginal and African Canadian applicants.

Pay Grade:  PR 07 - PR 13

Salary Range:  $1,797.80 - $2,786.11 Bi-Weekly

This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU).

If applying from outside a government office, employees must apply correctly via this link:

Failure to apply correctly means that your application will not be given first consideration as a bargaining unit applicant, and will only be included if external applications are pursued.

External applicants and current casual employees will only be considered if there are no qualified civil service bargaining unit candidates.

Our goal is to be a diverse workforce that is representative, at all job levels, of the citizens we serve.  The Government of Nova Scotia has an Employment Equity Policy and we welcome applications from Aboriginal People, African Nova Scotians and Other Racially Visible Persons, Persons with Disabilities and Women in occupations or positions where they are under-represented.  If you are a member of one of the equity groups, you are encouraged to self-identify on your electronic application.

Offer of employment is conditional upon the completion of all applicable background checks and confirmation of credentials, the results of which must be satisfactory to the employer.

We thank all applicants for their interest, however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.  For questions or concerns, please contact Competitions@novascotia.ca.
