The Correctional Services Division of Nova Scotia's Department of Justice contributes to the maintenance of a safe and secure society through the provision of community and custody-based corrections.  Community Corrections includes adult diversion measures, court information, offender supervision and reintegration programs and planning.  Custody-based corrections includes facility operations and reintegration programs and planning.

 

About Our Opportunity

 

Reporting to the Deputy Superintendent, as the Assistant Deputy Superintendent, Operations (ADSO) you will ensure the smooth daily operations of the correctional facility through the appropriate deployment of captains and line staff. You provide oversight and direction regarding offender admission and discharge, warrant interpretation, offender placement, program delivery, scheduled facility searches, temporary absences and in the management of facility emergency situations.  In addition, you are responsible for liaising with: Sheriff Services regarding the transfer of offenders; policing agencies regarding laying potential charges as a result of offender criminal activity within the facility; and communicating reportable incidents to Correctional Services Senior Management.  In the absence of senior management you are responsible for the overall administration of the building.  You are also responsible for human resource-related functions, including effective management of captains and line staff; training; labour relations; recruitment and staffing; attendance management; and performance management. This position is also responsible to ensure compliance with the collective agreement and Occupational Health and Safety legislation.

 

About You

 

A University Degree in a related field and a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in a Correctional facility; at least two (2) of which were at the management level, is required.  An acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience, such as work as a Senior Probation Officer, in the Policing or Courts fields or in other areas of Corrections or Criminal Justice may be considered.

 

Knowledge of facility operations, including safety/security, case management, offender discipline, crisis management, human resource management and quality assurance and risk management would be an asset.  Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Corrections Act, the Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Workers’ Compensation Act and the OH&S Act, and the ability to interpret Collective Agreements would be an asset.

 

Leadership competencies required at this level of work are: Analytical Thinking, Action Management, Team Leadership, Initiative, Effective Interactive Communication, Partnering and Relationship Building, and Intercultural and Diversity Proficiency.

 

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

 

Other Considerations

 

This is a 24/7 operational facility, currently the planned working time is Monday to Friday day shifts, this may change due to operational requirements.

 

One position is specific for a female candidate as per regulation.

Pay Grade:  EC 11 

 

Salary Range:  $2,652.79 - $3,315.98 Bi-Weekly
