About Our Opportunity


We are looking for an enthusiastic post-secondary student to work with a passionate team of professional and technical staff to assist with the promotion of sustainable natural resource management.  You will help the Department of Lands and Forestry promote our natural resource programs and initiatives by working with groups, organizations, private woodland owners and the general public.

Primary Accountabilities


Working with Outreach and Education staff, you will be working on the Woodland Management Program (Home Study Modules) to create and update content for a new online website.  Additionally, you will work with our Communications advisor and department staff to create new website content to ensure the most current and pertinent information is available and accessible to the public, and that we are engaging a diverse public. Supplementing this work will be the design and roll-out of a social media plan to build awareness, promote and increase public engagement both on our website and social media platforms.


Additionally, you will support the work on Outreach and Education projects and initiatives which will include working on the following:


  • Producing newsletters and education materials for client groups
  • Database maintenance and updating
  • Assisting the Outreach Forester with natural resource stewardship projects
  • Assist the Hunter Education Coordinator with the creation and promotion of a Nova Scotia Dream Hunt program
  • Responding to information requests


In the Spring and Summer, you may also assist with the planning, logistics and running of a number of events, including:


  • Woodlot Owner of the Year site assessments
  • Kids in the Forest*
  • Back to Nature Camp – early July at the Chaswood Facility in Middle Musquodoboit*
  • Learn to Camp Program*
  • Various Events that our department will be represented at (exhibitions, conferences, meetings, etc.)*

*these events are subject to current Covid restrictions and may or may not take place in 2021.

Qualifications and Experience


You must be a full-time post-secondary student in the field of science, environmental science, education, natural resource management or other related discipline and returning to school in fall 2021.



You have strong organizational, communication (written and verbal), time mangement and interpersonal skills.  You are capable of working both independently and as part of a team. You will be familiar with computers including standard office software such as word processing, spreadsheet email, and social media platforms. 


The following are considered assets:


  • knowledge or experience with education and outreach program planning and delivery
  • experience with delivering public presentations
  • first aid certification.


We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions


This position will work in a variety of environments including office, outdoors (in varying weather conditions), public spaces and events. Must have the ability to lift and handle equipment of varying weight. Occasional overnight stays away from the home office as well as work on weekends and evenings may be required. A valid driver’s license is required. Candidates selected for interviews may be required to submit a Driver’s Abstract, Criminal Records and Child Abuse Registry check.



Employees are expected to provide their own safety boots.

The location of this position is Halifax.  The start date will be May 3, 2021 with an anticipated end date of August 27, 2021.


Pay Grade:  HOURLY 

Salary Range:  $16.50 - $22.13 Hourly
