About Our Opportunity


Under the provisions of the Children and Family Services Act, the Social Worker ensures the child has a permanency plan, that they are protected from abuse and neglect, as well as provides ongoing services to parents and children and assesses families for placement of children.

Social Workers are appointed by the Minister of Community Services, as outlined in section 6 (1) of the Children and Family Services Act:

There may be appointed by the Minister, in accordance with the Civil Service Act, such persons as the Minister may designate to carry out duties in accordance with this Act and the regulations.

 

Primary Accountabilities


You will provide a wide variety of professional child welfare services which may include protection services for children; development, coordination, and implementation of foster care and adoption services (Including the assessment of homes, training and supports services to foster parents); and planning and supervision of children in care and custody.

 

On a rotating schedule you will be required to provide child protection services for a designated area, after regular business hours including weekends and reporting to the provincial after hours response team.

 

Ensuring the safety and well-being of children, the Social Worker intervenes under the Children and Family Services Act, and in accordance with the legislation and policies of the program, to protect children from abuse or neglect; provides ongoing services to parents and children and assesses families for placement of children.

 

Qualifications and Experience


You will have a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) (previous child welfare experience will be considered an asset); or are a Registered Social Worker (RSW) who is currently classified and practicing as a social worker in the field of child welfare.

You must be eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers. A good knowledge of child development, family functioning, child abuse and neglect, as well as effective intervention strategies with individuals and families is required. Knowledge of the Children and Family Service Act is a definite asset.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions


The majority of the work involves meeting with clients in their homes or service providers at their place of business. This necessitates considerable driving time, sometimes in adverse weather conditions. While present in the office, time is spent sitting in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.


Often required to work beyond regular business hours, often on short notice. Personal resiliency is essential to meet the physical and emotional demands of this position.  Subjected to high degree of stress and must be able to work under pressure and in crisis.

 

Additional Information


You may be eligible for reimbursement of your registration fees to the NS College of Social Workers.
 

You must have a valid driver’s licence and have the ability to travel when responding to various work site locations. Travel expenses will be covered in accordance with the collective agreement, policies and procedures.

This is a Term/Temporary/Casual employment opportunity with an anticipated end date of November 26, 2021. The appointment status (‘term’, ‘temporary’ or ‘casual’) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade:  PR 09 - PR 15  

Salary Range:  $2,028.21 - $3,139.57 Bi-Weekly
