Competition Considerations


This posting will be used to establish a Hiring Pool for the Central Region which will include Permanent, Term, Temporary and Casual opportunities for Halifax (Gottingen Street and Bayers Road), Dartmouth (Cole Harbour and Alderney Drive) and Lower Sackville.


Please Note: Casual work (less than 10 week’s duration) is non-bargaining unit status work and successful applicants will not be considered to have bargaining unit status.


In accordance with the civil service collective agreement, the order of consideration will be ‘expression of interest’ applicants, internal applicants then external applicants.  As a result, external applicants, please note that your application will be considered primarily for casual, temporary or term positions.


A day in the life of a Caseworker


As the Caseworker, Employment Support and Income Assistance (ESIA) you will assess the eligibility of individuals who are in need of financial assistance and/or support, to determine their initial and ongoing eligibility.  This involves participation in the continuum of service delivery, i.e. intake, assessments, records maintenance, initial employability assessment, general and/or specialized case management, consultation, communication of outcomes to applicants, and referrals to appropriate programs and community resources.  In a team environment, you work collaboratively with colleagues, community and clients to mobilize client’s personal resources toward self-sufficiency, through the use of appropriate supporting interventions.


What makes a great Caseworker


You will have a Bachelor’s Degree (Social Science) or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  A working knowledge and experience in the application of ESIA policy/legislation, Occupational Health and Safety responsibilities, as well as related programs of the Department will be considered an asset.  Excellent interviewing, communication (written/verbal), planning/organizational, team building and crisis intervention skills are required.  You will have an understanding of budgetary and case management concepts, supplemented by demonstration of initiative, sound judgement, sensitivity to the impact of culture, socioeconomic status, gender, age and sexual orientation on client experience. You must be able to meet deadlines and deal effectively with difficult situations.



Pay Grade:  PR 04 - PR 11  


Salary Range:  $1,590.48 - $2,570.87 Bi-Weekly


This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU).
