Within the Regional Services Division, the Regional Programming section is responsible for public trust programming, including the Agriculture in the Classroom – Nova Scotia program, and Knowledge and Technology Transfer, which strengthens the connections between researchers and industry. Regional Programming also provides provincial level support to staff in the regional offices, through coordination, development of networks, research, and resource development in priority areas, including work with under-represented groups in the agriculture and food sectors.

 

About Our Opportunity

 

As the Provincial Agricultural Diversity Programming Coordinator, you will provide support, under the guidance of the Senior Diversity Programming Specialist, for the delivery of agricultural programs aimed at improving the participation of Mi’kmaw people in Nova Scotia’s food and agriculture sector. The primary role of this position is to provide leadership in identifying opportunities and innovations in regional programming for youth development, agricultural education, community food security, and agricultural extension programming for Nova Scotia’s Mi’kmaq communities, both on and off reserve. In addition, another primary role of this position is to engage these communities in the development of a specialized strategy to increase their participation in the agriculture and food sectors. The Regional Services Division has developed a Diversity & Inclusion Action Plan in which we have committed to take proactive measures to create a welcoming environment for all Nova Scotians to participate in the agriculture and food sectors. We recognize the historical exclusion of Mi’kmaw communities from these sectors and are excited to learn about ways that the Department of Agriculture can contribute in meaningful ways to Mi’kmaw communities.

 

Primary Accountabilities

 

  • Provides independent, specialized expertise for the development of a government strategy to improve agriculture and food entrepreneurship, community food security, agricultural education, and agricultural career promotion among indigenous communities.
  • Assists the Agriculture in the Classroom – Nova Scotia program with the development and delivery of classroom resources and student programs, including resources for Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey Schools.
  • Supports the implementation of the first year of the Department of Agriculture’s new entrance scholarship and summer work experience for a Mi’kmaw post-secondary student.
  • Acts as a cultural liaison between Mi’kmaw communities and organizational bodies, the Department of Agriculture and the broader agricultural community.

 

Qualifications and Experience


As the ideal candidate you will have a Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 5 years of work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

The following skills or work experience would be assets:
 

  • Youth leadership development and/or classroom experience
  • Experience in the agriculture or food sectors, including at the community food security level
  • Experience leading community-based projects
  • Strong networking, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to bring a two-eyed seeing lens to a non-indigenous workplace

Working Conditions

 

  • This role is primarily based in an office environment. You may be working at your computer for extended periods of time.
  • Office location is flexible and can be arranged at any of the following locations: Sydney, Truro-Bible Hill, or Kentville.
  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day
  • May be required to work overtime on occasion
  • Must have access to reliable transportation

Pay Grade:  PR 13  

Salary Range:  $2,396.86 - $2,913.59 Bi-Weekly
