Under Article 13 of the Collective Agreement between the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 1867, the following opportunity is being posted:

 

 

 

 

About Us

 

Maintaining our Provincial Built Infrastructure is no small job.  The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges.

 

We are currently recruiting for Spare Winter Equipment Operators to provide snow and ice control services throughout our Province. If you are flexible, possess experience operating Heavy Equipment, and seeking an opportunity to directly contribute to the safety of our roads and highways, we want to hear from you.

About Our Opportunity

 

Weather in Nova Scotia is challenging and ever changing. As an Equipment Operator, your role is pivotal in helping the public arrive safely to their destination.

 

This position is primarily responsible for operating snow removal equipment such as snow plows, graders and loaders. General maintenance of the equipment, pre-and-post trip inspections, and completion of daily logs is also required.

 

Depending on the winter season and provincial needs, you may also be required to assist with construction and maintenance work such as:

 

  • Maintaining traffic control signs
  • Road surface repairs
  • General maintenance
  • Traffic control

This posting will be used to fill spare positions with no guarantee of hours. Applicants successful in Spare roles will be called upon on an as needed basis.

 

About You

 

Grade 10, a minimum Class 3 license with air brake endorsement plus 2 years of truck driving experience at a Class 3 (or higher) level OR successful completion of a recognized professional driving course plus one (1) year of Class 3 (or higher) driving experience is required.

 

As the ideal candidate, you are flexible, self-motivated, and comfortable working in adverse weather conditions.  As part of our team, you bring professionalism and hold a high standard for client service.

 

Knowledge of hydraulic systems and a mechanical aptitude are considered assets. Previous experience operating trucks with salt and plow equipment, a Class I license, and knowledge of salt spreading systems are also considered assets.

 

Other Considerations

 

This competition will be used to fill spare vacancies in our Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, Richmond, Victoria and Cape Breton locations.   Once fully trained, there may be opportunities for regular work for the remainder of the winter season.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to attend and complete a two-week, paid, training period which will provide you with the skills necessary for effective snow and ice control.

 

A copy of your Driver’s Abstract will be required if selected for an interview.

 

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: reference checks, practical driving test on a tandem truck, interview(s), and a written component.  Applicants will also be required to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment.

 

 

 

 

Salary Range:  $21.62 Hourly

 

This is a bargaining unit position under CUPE local 1867.  Successful candidates will be expected to perform duties as necessary within their zone.
