Department Overview

 

The Department of Natural Resources has broad responsibilities relative to the development, management, conservation and protection of forest, mineral, parks and wildlife resources and the administration of the province's Crown land.

 

As part of the Renewable Resources branch, you will be contributing to the vital Forestry division that develops and conducts research related to forest management practices, developing strategies for sustainable management of Nova Scotia’s forests. The Forestry division does this by maintaining a provincial forest inventory and a comprehensive digital (GIS) database, coordinating the maintenance of scaling standards, managing the provincial forest nursery and developing forest management tools for Integrated Resource Management through extensive and ongoing forest ecosystem research. 

Duties

 

As the Forest Resource Analyst, you will be responsible for carrying out forest model development, analysis, programming and database management. You are an expert in forest modelling and will take on a leadership role in the update & development of various forest resource modelling and planning processes. In this role, you will be able to showcase your leadership skills and provide professional and expert technical advice to various stakeholders.

It will provide you with an exciting opportunity to be creative and take initiative to advance provincial-level initiatives and modelling approaches in support of ecosystem-based forest management.

 

This position will report to the Resource Analysis Group Leader.

Qualifications

 

A Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry plus 6 years’ experience in forest resource modelling or a Masters Degree in Forestry or Natural Resource Management and 4 years of related experience is required.

 

You must possess expertise in forest-level modeling and extensive experience using the Remsoft Spatial Planning Software (Woodstock, Stanley).  Computer programming experience in developing software applications that support forest modeling processes is required. You must also have experience with relational databases and spatial databases used in forest modeling, specifically ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Workstation software, and relational database software (Microsoft SQL Server, MS Access, MS FoxPro). Experience programming within the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET environment and Delphi would be considered an asset.

 

To be successful in this position, you will have the ability to deal with multiple ongoing and complex projects, shifting priorities, and tight time lines. You will be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, and to develop effective working relationships with staff and clients at all levels of government, the public and academic communities.

 

Experience developing, managing, deploying strategic and tactical level planning models across diverse stakeholder groups would be considered an asset as well as modelling experience related to forest economics, forest policy assessment, forest carbon, forest based bioenergy, climate change, or wildlife habitat.

Pay Grade:  PR 15  

 

Salary Range:  $2,414.00 - $2,943.00 Bi-Weekly
