Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job.


The Fleet Services Division of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal’s supports the back bone of our provincial highway infrastructure. We are located at Miller Lake, the Central Fleet Services hub of the province.  The team at Miller Lake, is pivotal in ensuring the equipment used to maintain, repair, and build Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, and 4,100 bridges, is always safe and ready to go. 


We have an opportunity available for a Coordinator of District Financial Management. This is your opportunity to have a direct impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of operational and financial objectives.


About Our Opportunity


As the Coordinator of District Financial Management, you contribute to the management of Highway Programs by providing strategic advice and recommendations to optimize department resources through the provision of accurate, timely and relevant accounting information.


You will oversee a team of financial staff all the while ensuring they have the technical knowledge, training plans and tools to support efficient financial information. You will coordinate and lead your financial staff through establishing priorities and objectives, and monitoring for completeness and accuracy through ongoing audits.


You will harmonize financial and management accounting functions through the administration of:

  • payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable;
  • procurement, inventory, asset management;
  • budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis; and
  • reporting.


You are critical to standardizing and advancing consistency of financial functions through the evaluation, development and implementation of policies, procedures and processes.  Furthermore, you will maintain and promote effective communications and collaboration among all stakeholders through monthly meetings, participation on various committees, and facilitating presentations.


About You


You have a bachelor’s degree in Commerce or Business Administration plus several years of financial management experience. An equivalent combination of related education, training and experience will be considered. Related experience includes experience coordinating, monitoring, and directing financial staff in the establishment of priorities, objectives and deadlines. 


As the ideal candidate, you exhibit:

  • proficiency in the use of financial software along with Microsoft Suite;
  • a proven track record of effectively handling multiple projects simultaneously
  • strong leadership and mentorship abilities
  • superior communication skills;
  • the ability to think innovatively; and
  • have an aptitude for collaborative and independent problem solving.


An accounting designation (CA, CMA or CGA) designation, though not required, is considered an asset, along with experience using a Corporate Financial Management System (CFMS) such as SAP.  


We operate in a fast-paced, high volume, and complex environment and as such, maintaining a high level of productivity in your role is key to your success.   Given the confidential and sensitive financial information you will encounter daily, it is critical that you use discretion when dealing with such information.  


Leadership competencies required at this level of work are: Analytical Thinking, Action Management, Team Leadership, Initiative, Effective Interactive Communication, Partnering and Relationship Building, and Intercultural and Diversity Proficiency.


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.



Pay Grade:  EC 09 


Salary Range:  $2,192.38 - $2,740.47 Bi-Weekly
