About Our Opportunity


As a student Maintenance Worker at the Amherst Visitor Information Centre, you are a part of a team responsible for assisting with the seasonal maintenance of the interior and exterior of the Amherst Visitors Information Centre building and grounds including required janitorial duties.  

 

This opportunity would be a great fit for a student that enjoys being outside, likes working with various types of equipment and is able to perform physical tasks.  As a Maintenance student, you will gain hands on experience, and receive training and mentorship from our maintenance employees.

 

This position reports to the Amherst VIC Maintenance Supervisor.

Primary Accountabilities

 

Daily responsibilities include assisting with :

 

  • Mowing, planting, seeding, weeding, cutting and trimming trees and bushes), painting, routine equipment and tools maintenance, janitorial (cleaning and stocking the washrooms along with cleaning the windows, floors and dusting) and maintaining cleaning supplies.
  • Assisting with site maintenance, equipment inventories, security checks, opening and closing procedures and other duties as required.
  • Working in varying weather conditions and hot/cold/wet/windy environments.
  • Providing professional customer service and relations to visitors.
  • Working safely by following the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and Workplace policies all safe work practices.

About You

 

To be successful in this role you must currently be enrolled as a student and returning to school in the fall (or next applicable semester for the program) and hold a valid drivers license. Preference will be given to students with maintenance experience. 

 

This role requires an individual who has a positive attitude and ability to speak confidently and professionally when addressing visitors and staff within the facility.  You work well independently and in team settings, valuing and respecting a diverse and inclusive environment.  

 

You also have basic computer skills, including use of software packages such as Microsoft Office (Outlook and Word).

 

The following would be considered as asset:

 

  • Strong aptitude for safe operation of equipment, and general maintenance
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and sanitation requirements
  • Certification in First Aid and WHMIS

Working Conditions


This is a labour-intensive opportunity requiring physical strength and dexterity. At times, you are subject to various environmental and temperature extremes. 

  • Ability to lift/carry 50+lbs of equipment over varying terrain is required.

Additional Information

 

There is one full-time (35 hours a week) student maintenance position based out of the Amherst provincial VIC, 90 Cumberland Loop. The position involves shiftwork, including weekends and holidays with shifts from 9am – 5pm.

 

This opportunity will start in mid-May with an end date of August 31, 2024 or later (depending on the return to post secondary school date).

Pay Grade:  HOURLY 

Salary Range:  $15.42 - $29.11 Hourly
