About Us

 

NS Animal Health Laboratory provides support for agriculture and agribusiness in Nova Scotia. We provide diagnostic testing to support farmers, veterinarians, clinics, animal welfare, and food producers. The Animal Health Lab maintains ISO 17025:2017 accreditation for various tests.

Primary Accountabilities

 

Provide general support for the NS Animal Health Laboratory from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday.  Duties include receiving animal specimens and carcasses from the general public, collecting submission information and case history from animal owners, and assisting Duty pathologists with animal necropsies (i.e. Preparation/clean-up).  The student will fill in for the Pathology Assistant during vacation/illness (i.e. assisting the Duty pathologist by receiving and preparing carcasses for necropsy and clean-up).  Additional duties will include supporting work in other sections of our ISO17025 accredited laboratory such as assisting in sample reception, data entry for case accession, preparation of media for performance of diagnostic testing, assisting Medical Laboratory Technologists with laboratory testing in Bacteriology, Serology, Parasitology, Histology and Dairy diagnostic testing.  The student may  assist the Chief Veterinary Officer with projects supporting provincial animal health.

Qualifications and Experience

 

Enrollment in a post-secondary Pre-Veterinary Degree program, and returning to school in the fall.  They will have an up-to-date vaccination for Tetanus and will have (or be willing to take) WHMIS/OH&S/First Aid with CPR.  A valid  driver’s license is mandatory.

Working Conditions

 

This position also involves working on an on-call basis during weekends and holidays from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. throughout the summer and school year.  On-call duties between these hours involve being available to receive specimens/carcasses from the general public by appointment at the laboratory, and in some cases assisting the Duty pathologist with emergency animal necropsy cases.

Additional Information

 

The hours will be full time weekdays Monday through Thursday (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)  with anticipated ‘On Call’ weekend and holiday work.  The anticipated duration of this position will be April 3, 2023 to March 31, 2024.

 

     

Pay Grade:  HOURLY 

Salary Range:  $17.25 - $28.12 Bi-Weekly
