About Our Opportunity

 

Under the direction of the Area Manager/District Supervisor, or designate, the Maintenance Worker 3A is responsible for leading, participating and supervising seasonal staff who carry out department programs. In addition, you conduct general maintenance and cleaning of department vehicles, buildings, grounds, and equipment, and seek compliance of self and from staff with Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and department policies. Further, you operate department vehicles and equipment, and assist district technicians in forestry, wildlife, wildfire, parks and other general district duties as assigned. 

Primary Accountabilities

-Supervises and/or directs assigned seasonal employees' persons on a daily basis. Maintains fire equipment in a state of readiness by implementing a regularly scheduled inventory, maintenance and testing program. 

 

-Completes minor repairs to fire, parks, and other infrastructure equipment.

 

-Oversees the daily maintenance of department vehicles, equipment, buildings and grounds, and ensures scheduled maintenance requirements are met. Oversees and/or completes minor repairs and janitorial services for office, depot and other structures. Maintains maintenance records as required. Notifies superiors of major repairs and maintenance issues. 

 

-Supervises and/or directs assigned seasonal employees' persons on a daily basis. Maintains fire equipment in a state of readiness by implementing a regularly scheduled inventory, maintenance and testing program. 

 

-Completes minor repairs to fire, parks, and other infrastructure equipment, and may requisition replacement as required. 

 

-Maintains maintenance records as required. Notifies superiors of major repairs and maintenance issues. Maintains property and grounds through direction and direct activities including grass cutting, snow removal, and sanding/salt applications. Operation of department equipment and machines on a regular basis.

 

-Other duties as required. 

Qualifications and Experience

• Grade 10 and a minimum of 4 years related experience. Related experience would include experience in general carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanical knowledge; building and grounds maintenance; general machine and equipment maintenance; use of tractors, ride-on mowers, push mowers, string trimmers and hand and power tools.

 

In addition, you hold the following credentials or experience: 

· Supervision and evaluating the work of others.

• Valid (Standard) First Aid certificate and WHMIS training.

• Valid N.S. Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent and able to operate standard shift vehicle.

• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

• Must be computer literate with ability to utilize government software programs as well as

generate and maintain various inventory records.

• Knowledge of cleaning methods and sanitation requirements.

 

This position requires the ability to lead and work as part of a team and perform strenuous manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Duties often require working irregularly scheduled hours, weekends, evenings and holidays. During times of high fire activity may be assigned to assist in fire suppression. Must be willing to be transported in department aircraft and attend department training related to duties and responsibilities. This position will be able to lead projects and tasks carried out by both Department staff and contractors Employee shall follow the OH&S Act and Regulations, NS Government Corporate Policy, the Department OHS Program, Safe Work Practices and any other policies; and will be active with implementing the department Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Programs.

 

Assets

• Basic Wildland Fire Suppression Certification.

• Experience and / or training in radio communication.

• Tractor/Backhoe Operator Training.

• Ability to lead Department Training Sessions

• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

• Forest Safety Society certified for power saw and spacing saws.

Pay Grade:  MOS 10  

Salary Range:  $1,769.60 - $1,811.11 Bi-Weekly
