The Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service prosecutes charges laid under the Criminal Code and under Nova Scotia statutes such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act.


Cases are handled by lawyers called Crown Attorneys. About 80 Crown Attorneys across the province handle about 40,000 cases each year in Nova Scotia.


About the Opportunity


Under minimum supervision of the Coordinator Administrative Services, the Clerk 3 is the initial contact person for Dartmouth Public Prosecution Service office and as such must assess the needs and determine the urgency of all requests presented by public, witnesses, accused persons, victims and members of the legal community.  The Clerk directs inquiries within the Crown Attorney’s office as well as other areas of government using an excellent knowledge of government structure and services. The incumbent encounters situations of conflict, and is responsible for recognizing and managing such situations in a calm, professional manner. 


This role also involves administrative duties within the Crown Attorney's office, which are performed concurrently with the primary task of providing direction and information as requested.  The scope of this position requires that in addition to having an extensive knowledge base, the incumbent has strong organizational skills, the ability to multi-task and the ability to be a team player. 


About You


Four years’ of related experience is required; an acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.  Experience in a public and/or legal environment is required. 


The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate sound judgement and initiative, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Due to the nature if the work, this individual must have a demonstrated ability to exercise tact, diplomacy and poise in dealing with the public, departmental staff, witnesses, accused persons and representatives from the public and private sector, members of the legal profession, both in person and on the phone. Knowledge of various legal documents, and proficiency in typing with a high level of accuracy and file management is required.  Strong administrative and organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to work independently are assets.  The candidate must be proficient in Microsoft (MS) Word, MS Outlook or a comparable work processing.


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.


Other Considerations


Knowledge and experience of government, court procedure, PICS and JEIN would be an asset.



Pay Grade:  CL 18  


Salary Range:  $1,510.00 - $1,689.00 Bi-Weekly


This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU).
