About Us

The Department of Health and Wellness offers opportunities to grow and advance in a dynamic sector that touches the lives of all Nova Scotians.  Along with our partners, including the Nova Scotia Health Authority and the IWK Health Centre, we’re committed to continually improving our health care system. With a focus on collaborative primary health care, continuing care, improved supports for mental health and addictions, digital health, capital infrastructure, and more, the department is thinking differently about how to plan, fund, legislate and monitor to improve access and service delivery. To do this, we need leaders at all levels of the organization who embrace a challenge, and believe in their ability to make a difference.

About Our Opportunity

Regional Medical Officers of Health (RMOH) support the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) and IWK through the provision of leadership and expertise related to the promotion and protection of health and the prevention of disease and injury.  Through inter-disciplinary and inter-sectoral partnerships, you will provide leadership in the assessment and measurement of the health of populations and the development of strategies for improving health and well-being through health promotion, disease prevention and health protection initiatives.

You will support the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health (OCMOH) in legislated health protection and other responsibilities.  Under legislation, you are responsible for informing, investigating and taking action on any health hazard, notifiable disease or condition, communicable disease or public health emergency that poses a health risk to the population.

If you are able to picture what is possible in public health and are someone with public health training, strong communication, relationship building and leadership skills, demonstrate public health core competencies and are passionate about promoting our shared vision of public health in Nova Scotia, we want to hear from you!

About You

Successful candidates for the position of the Medical Officer of Health should be licensable by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia and have a fellowship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or other acceptable specialty qualifications). Experience in public health practice will be considered an asset. Post-graduate training in public health with public health experience may also be considered. Successful candidates will be encouraged to apply for joint appointments with Dalhousie and other Universities in Nova Scotia involved in the public health field.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
