About Our Opportunity
As Senior Auditor, you will be reporting to the Manager, Audit and Administration, Audit & Enforcement. Your main responsibilities will involve the development, planning, implementation, supervision, and administration of audits for our fuel, tobacco, vape and sales tax programs. These audits will be carried out in accordance with the Revenue Act, The Sales Tax Act, the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), and the Petroleum Products Pricing Act. Additionally, you will be responsible for audit requirements under the International Registration Plan (IRP).
Specifically, your role will encompass conducting audits under the Revenue Act, which includes fuel tax, tobacco tax, Nova Scotia Sales Tax (NSST) on vehicles, vessels, and aircraft, as well as the Nova Scotia Indian Fuel Tax Exemption (NSIFTE) program. You will also be overseeing audits of tax rebate and refund claims, including the Your Energy Rebate Program (YERP). In addition, you will be conducting audits under the Petroleum Products pricing Act.
Key Accountabilities
- Performing and/or leading a group of auditors using advanced techniques to evaluate complex accounting systems/financial transactions.
- Overseeing audits of financial accounting systems of vendors and consumers, including on-site inspections, and monthly returns analysis for compliance with legislation.
- Handling queries, complaints, and providing legislative interpretation.
- Supervising and managing work assignments for auditors, utilizing advanced auditing techniques.
- Reviewing and signing off on completed audits and administrative reports, directing and approving issuance of Notices of Assessments, and preparing preliminary information for reports to the Provincial Tax Commissioner in case of objections or appeals.
- Coordinating and managing staff on special projects, including research development and reporting.
- Support the Manager, Audit and Administration with supervisory and managerial tasks
- Overseeing the preparation of audit programs for various areas administered by Audit and Enforcement
- Potential requirement to appear in court as a witness.
About You
To be successful in this position, you possess a bachelor’s degree plus 5 years related experience or an acceptable equivalent of training and experience. In addition, you possess:
- Comprehensive knowledge of auditing and accounting procedures and practices, including auditing techniques;
- Extensive knowledge of the Revenue Act, the Sales Tax Act, the Petroleum, Products Pricing Act, and the Regulations pursuant to those Acts;
- Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills;
- The ability to manage difficult and sensitive situations;
- Confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy;
- The ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
The following would be viewed as assets: completion or enrollment in CPA program, experience with a similar taxation jurisdiction (Federal or Provincial), bilingualism (English and French).
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

This is a full-time permanent position based in Dartmouth. A valid driver’s license is required as some travel is required.

Pay Grade: PR 13
Salary Range: $2,556.10 - $3,107.16 Bi-Weekly
