The Marine Services division of The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal maintains and operates the provincial ferries including: Englishtown, Little Narrows, Country Harbor, LaHave River, Tancook Island, and Digby Neck. Our Marine staff help to further connect and expand Nova Scotia’s transportation network; all the while ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our Ferries. Our provincial ferries operate 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

About Our Opportunity

 

As the Marine Engineer, you will operate the main engines of the Ferry; ensuring that all auxiliaries, pumps, ventilating fans, steering motors and furnaces are functioning in a safe and efficient manner. 

 

You will be responsible for:

 

  • inspecting, repairing, and maintaining the mechanical and electrical equipment;
  • assisting in directing traffic on the Ferry including arranging vehicles and/or cargo on deck;
  • collecting and recording fares (tickets where applicable), and
  • ensuring that the ferry is clean at all times.

 

About You

 

Highschool or equivalent, plus a Transport Canada Small Vessel Machinery Operator’s Certificate and three (3) years' seafaring experience is required.

 

You must have your:

 

  • Marine Emergency Duties Certificate
  • Seafarer’s Marine Medical Certificate,
  • and a Marine First Aid Certificate.

 

Outstanding teamwork and interpersonal skills are essential to your success, along with your ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Strong ability to exercise independent judgement and initiative in your duties will aid in ensuring the Ferry meets safety standards and maintains schedules. Consistently, you maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service.

 

Other Considerations

 

Hours of work include 12 hour shifts and may require the working of various alternating hours per week in order to maintain the ferry schedule.

 

The ability to lift 50 pounds, as well as ability to stand, shovel, walk, climb and sit for extended periods of time is required in this role.

 

 

Pay Grade:  MOS 13  

 

Salary Range:  $1,716.88 - $1,763.35 Bi-Weekly

 

This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU).
