About Us
The Department of Energy is now accepting applications for up to three Co-op students for a period of 16 weeks starting on or after April 28, 2025. Candidates must provide proof of status as a full-time post-secondary student, be registered in a cooperative education post-secondary program, and be scheduled to return to school in Fall 2025 to be eligible for this program.
About Our Opportunity
The Department of Energy serves the social, environmental, and economic interests of Nova Scotians by ensuring all energy resources are developed and used in an efficient and sustainable manner. The Department delivers programs and activities related to electricity, renewable energy, energy efficiency, petroleum, and industry development.
The Clean Energy Branch provides leadership and direction to help transition the electricity, building, and transportation sectors to clean energy, and efficient energy use. The Branch focuses on policies and programs that help achieve the Province’s clean energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals, while maximizing benefits to Nova Scotians by promoting local energy production, system reliability and equity.
A key priority for the Department will be to identify and support innovative tools and research that will help Nova Scotian businesses and workers to enhance their capacity to participate in the economic opportunities afforded by the energy transformation, including providing a clear pathway for the adoption of clean technologies. Accelerating Nova Scotia’s energy transformation will help to meet the Province’s sustainable development goals, provide a pathway for the Government of Canada, other institutions and larger customers to obtain renewable electricity for their operations in Nova Scotia, improve the competitiveness of Nova Scotian businesses, and support increased energy choices for consumers.
This includes providing support to the renewable energy sector, clean transportation sector, and energy efficiency sector.
Primary Accountabilities
In this position, you will be under the general supervision of one or more of the following Divisions in the Clean Energy Branch:
Clean Electricity Division. The Division's focus areas included the transition from coal to renewables, solar and wind programs, and grid technologies and batteries. Your primary accountabilities will include:
- Working collaboratively with senior staff on policy and regulatory analysis, development and implementation for Wind and Solar programming in the province.
- Providing program administration support which may include tracking/coding correspondence, engaging with stakeholders, and preparing briefing notes.
- Offering policy guidance for a range of renewable electricity projects, programs, and initiatives.
- Preparing presentations, reports, and other materials for senior leadership.
Clean Transportation Division. The Division’s focus areas include active transportation, transportation demand management, and electrification of transportation. Your primary accountabilities will include:
- Working collaboratively with staff to support research and policy analysis, development and implementation for active transportation, transportation demand management, electrification of transportation and other innovative initiatives in the province.
- Supporting program administration staff for the Low Carbon Communities or other programs, which may include tracking/coding correspondence, engaging with stakeholders, and preparing briefing notes.
- Preparing presentations, reports, and other materials for senior leadership.
Clean Buildings Division. The Division’s focus areas include energy efficiency programs, home fuel switching, and net zero buildings. Your primary accountabilities will include:
- Working collaboratively with staff to support research and policy analysis, development and implementation for energy efficiency initiatives in the province.
- Offering policy research and support related to, Green Workforce Development, energy training programs for racialized and Indigenous workers, home energy efficiency programming, among other initiatives.
- Preparing presentations, reports, and other materials for senior leadership.
These positions may perform other related duties as assigned.
About You
As the ideal candidate(s), you must be a returning student in the next applicable semester of a relevant program (such as Science, Engineering, Business, Environment, Sustainability) with an interest in Clean Energy, and be enrolled as a cooperative education student.
To be the successful candidate, you must:
- Clearly indicate course work or experience related to sustainable renewable energy, electricity legislation and regulations, climate change mitigation, stakeholder/community engagement, and/or policy analysis in your resume.
- Be an excellent communicator, both oral and written.
- Possess organization, time management, and prioritization skills.
- Have strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrate professionalism and the ability to tactfully navigate difficult conversations with the public or stakeholders.
- Be a self-starter with a high degree of personal initiative and integrity, who can work under minimal supervision and is comfortable working in team environments.
- Experience in data analysis and data visualization is considered an asset.
- Some creative experience in marketing or communications is considered an asset.

Pay Grade: HOURLY
Salary Range: $18.29 - $29.69 Hourly
