Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job. We are recruiting for a summer Civil Engineering student to help our province achieve important tasks!

 

The Building Infrastructure Design and Construction Group at the Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia buildings and infrastructure assets across a wide range of clients. We maintain and support various government buildings including hospitals, schools, museums, political core buildings, office buildings, and justice centres.

About Our Opportunity

 

As an Engineering Student on a Summer work term, you will gain practical experience and receive training and mentorship from highly qualified Engineering professionals.

 

We offer opportunities to participate in training courses for Standard First Aid and other safety courses. We will provide you with all the required technical and protective equipment you need and, as a bonus, you get to keep the work boots we provide you when your summer work ends.

 

There may be opportunity for overtime, mileage and meals which will be provided with sitework located outside of Halifax.

Primary Accountabilities

 

Reporting to the Manager, Engineering Services , the applicant will be expected to carry out a variety of tasks relating to the delivery of building construction projects and assist with construction administration including:
 

  • Assisting with coverage of various Engineering duties to help move and administrate projects under the guidance of Engineering staff;
  • Participating in and collaborating with various staff on special Engineering projects;
  • Attending project meetings with internal staff as well as external consultants and contractors;
  • Providing oversight for contracted work while ensuring quality, safety, and environmental standards are met and in accordance with Department standards, Acts and Regulations;
  • Assisting with Tender and Request for Proposal development; and
  • Completing work site inspections for various building projects through the area.

Qualifications and Experience

 

You are a Bachelor of Engineering student, enrolled in the Civil discipline and returning to school for the fall semester (or in the next applicable semester for the education program). Travel throughout the province may be required, as such, you must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable motor vehicle. Please include a copy of your driver’s abstract with your application. You demonstrate a keen interest in building construction and maintenance activities and are a self-starter. You have strong communication skills and are comfortable with both team and individual work settings.

Professional Skills

 

Good working knowledge of MS Office suite & computer software packages used in an Engineering environment.

 

The following are considered assets including:

 

  • Some familiarity with the Nova Scotia Building Code and other various codes and standards;
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • Familiarity with contract specifications; and
  • Training in First Aid

 

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

 

This is an in-person position in downtown Halifax. You can expect to travel to various building construction projects throughout the province, as project needs require.

Additional Information

 

This opportunity will start approximately April 28, 2025 with an end date of August 29, 2025.

 

There is one (1) position available in Halifax.

 

This opportunity could potentially be used for a Co-op placement. The successful candidate will be required to discuss with the Co-op office. 

 

Pay Grade:  HOURLY 

Salary Range:  $18.22 - $29.69 Hourly
