About Us

 

The Conciliation and Mediation Services Division, Labour Services Branch, promotes economic growth through fostering harmonious working relationships in unionized workplaces across the province. 

 

The Division delivers conciliation services, preventive mediation, training and other proactive outreach programs.  Conciliation and Mediation Services’ programs are aimed at helping to prevent and resolve disputes between employers, unions and employees in the public and private sectors during the collective bargaining process and throughout the life of the collective agreement. 

Primary Accountabilities

 

Primary accountabilities for this position include:

 

  • carrying a caseload of complex files and acting as a skilled third-party neutral providing dispute resolution services in the public and private sectors; 

 

  • conducting broad labour relations research, identifying best practices, and remaining current as to the trends in labour relations to inform the Division’s problem-solving approaches, policy initiatives, educational resources, and outreach.

About Our Opportunity

 

As the Conciliation and Mediation Officer, you will support the Division’s mandate to provide effective and efficient dispute resolution services, ensuring the quality of service meets the needs of clients and promotes harmonious labour-management relations throughout the province. 

 

The position reports to the Chief Conciliation and Mediation Services Officer.

Qualifications and Experience

 

To be successful you must possess a law degree or an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline plus five years of working experience in labour relations, including experience with legal research, analysis, and the interpretation of labour legislation, or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience.  

 

Experience acting as a third-party neutral would be considered an asset.

 

You have experience in collective bargaining and dispute resolution processes.  You are a problem solver with superior verbal and written communication skills, and exceptional attention to detail.  You can quickly and adeptly assess the dynamics of a multi-party environment, fairly address complex conflicts, in what is often a tense and adversarial atmosphere, and develop innovative processes and options to resolve disputes. 

 

You can create and maintain credibility as a third-party neutral in the labour-management community by demonstrating the highest level of integrity and an unbiased approach. You have strong relationship building skills, approach conflict objectively, understand the interests of the parties involved, and are able to gain the trust of the parties as an objective and neutral problem solver. 

 

A proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel is necessary.

 

Leadership competencies required at this level of work are:  Analytical Thinking, Strategic Orientation, Innovativeness, Adaptability and Flexibility, Initiative, Effective Interactive Communication, Partnering and Relationship Building, and Intercultural and Diversity Proficiency.

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered.

Pay Grade:  EC 12 

Salary Range:  $3,458.20 - $4,322.75 Bi-Weekly
