About The Role


We’re looking for an internet-era Director who wants to help government deliver on a digital and technology strategy for Nova Scotia, and specifically is passionate about delivering safer, faster, trusted and resilient user centered services. The NSDS, as it continues to support government digital transformation, also needs to maintain and enhance our cyber security capabilities.


Working in collaboration with others within the NSDS and across the public sector, the Director will provide an integrated approach to preventing and responding to cyber security threats, and safeguarding our information, assets, services and citizens.  The Director will also work to support the efforts of the Nova Scotia Health Authority and IWK Health Centre in securing their services.


The NSDS aims to build stronger cyber resilience across the whole of government to support the delivery of government programs and services. Success will be measured against the delivery approaches that enable next generation digital public services, and high-quality working environments for public servants.

In more detail, the Director, Cyber Security will:


  • Provide strategic leadership and advocacy in the delivery of internet-era, secure, user-centered services
  • Lead a strong team of engaged digital leaders and empower them to use internet-era ways of working, maintaining a strong focus on delivery priorities, ensuring accountability for delivery, and acting swiftly to respond to changing requirements
  • Work collaboratively across the organization to exchange best practice, contribute to cross-government strategies and deploy user-centered services
  • Make strategic choices on spending and procurement, challenging high risk or costly options
  • Promote resilience and responsiveness in the organization by being open and honest about lessons learned, challenges and the actions required to address unexpected developments
  • Monitor trends in program/service delivery, identifies and analyzes issues, and ensures effective integration of new practices into departmental policies and plans.
  • Collaborate with a diverse network of strategic partnerships to identify opportunities for creative, cost effective solutions and innovations to enable service delivery, and to enhance whole-of-government cyber security capabilities and standards, boosting cyber incident response coordination, and collaborating in the development of strategic cyber policy positions.
  • Provide advice to the Executive Director, Chief Digital Officer, Deputy Minister and other senior government officials on a wide range of complex matters, including, expert advice on cyber security issues, existing IT systems and programs legislative and regulatory obligations.
The successful candidate will be:


  • An experienced servant leader, championing the importance of people, teams, diversity and culture.

  • Good at building relationships within, and beyond, government.
  • Cool with agile ways of working, which are a relatively new idea in government.
  • Have an innate interest and curiosity in technology, cyber security, and how they come together to deliver excellent service experiences.
They will have:


  • Experience at a senior level, in the public or private sector, of delivering transformational change, to deliver safe and secure services, while driving efficiencies and service improvements.
  • Experience with internet-era practices, and capable of effectively leading multidisciplinary teams to define the best approach to achieve business/policy outcomes.
  • A strong curiosity for, and knowledge of the technology landscape and marketplace.
  • Experience with and an understanding of how to translate strategy into operations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of internet-era security practices to enable continuous delivery of security and privacy respecting services.
  • The ability to effectively translate of the technical areas of cyber security into language that can be widely understood - with the ability to navigate emerging, established and sometimes outdated cyber security practice in order to engage and influence the widest cyber security community.
  • A strong commitment to customer service excellence, teamwork and collaboration.
  • Experience with innovative approaches to sourcing services.
  • Experience with managing relationships with suppliers.
  • Experience making difficult decisions by pragmatically weighing the complexities involved against the need to act.
  • Experience engaging with stakeholders and colleagues at all levels to generate commitment to goals.
Salary Information

EC 14 - EC 14 

$3,903.65 - $4,730.33
