About Us

 

Building and maintaining our provincial highway infrastructure is no small job. 

 

The Department of Public Works (DPW) supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways, 4100 bridges, and 9 provincial ferries. The Registry of Motor Vehicles Division at the Department of Public Works (PW) is responsible for the administration of drivers and vehicles in the province. We are responsible for the policies, legislation, and regulations that guide Road Safety and operate in a proactive regulatory environment.  We maintain records regarding vehicles, driver licensing, medical fitness, driver competency, collisions, and compliance, all working together to ensure a safe road network.

About Our Opportunity

 

As the Director of Road Safety (Office of Registrar) you lead the staff at the Registry of Motor Vehicles including Driver Licensing and Suspension, Driver Records and Compliance, Driver Medical Fitness, Driver Testing and Training, Vehicle Engineering Standards, as well as Program Coordinators.

 

The decisions you make directly impact the safety of Nova Scotians and all road users.  You are a subject matter expert in the administration and interpretation of the Motor Vehicle Act, Off Highway Vehicles Act, as well as various other Acts and their associated Regulations.

 

You will forge partnerships and relationships with senior government, industry officials, and jurisdictional representatives to enhance road safety and compliance.  You will make recommendations on amendments to legislation, regulations, standards and policies. 

 

You provide support and direction on the delivery of Registry services though partnerships with Service Nova Scotia and enforcement agencies.

 

You will participate in the implementation of the Traffic Safety Act (TSA) and the associated regulations.  You will participate in the Registry of Motor Vehicles Modernization project.

 

You are critical in building a strong and cohesive team, as well as inspire innovation and change. You will also aid the development of the annual operational/business plan, strategic goals, and annual budgets. As the Director, you represent the Province of Nova Scotia's interests by serving on and contributing to various provincial and federal boards, committees and national associations.

Qualifications and Experience

 

You have a high degree of diplomacy along with progressive leadership experience. You must be familiar with the various acts and regulations that guide the industry including the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, Off Highway Vehicles Act, Public Highways Act, and the associated regulations.

 

Travel throughout the province is required; as such you must have a valid driver’s license and ability to travel.

 

Strong critical thinking and analytical skills are essential to your success as you often balance multi-dimensional problems involving diverse stakeholders. You must promote strong relationships and foster collaboration with other jurisdictions and stakeholders to identify benefits and opportunities to advance Registry of Motor Vehicles. You are known for your creativity and innovative ways of thinking to lead change and develop strategies.

Working Conditions

 

Your normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.

 

The majority of your work is conducted in an office environment. Minimal travel is required within the Province, with occasional travel outside of the Province.

 

There is pressure to meet deadlines while juggling a diverse number of projects that require ongoing planning/revising. You must be able to manage stressful, complex situations and balance many different issues and considerations. Work is often subject to extensive scrutiny and criticism by the public and by the diverse communities served.

Pay Grade:  EC 14 

Salary Range:  $4,461.45 - $5,576.81 Bi-Weekly
