A Sheriff's work focuses on the safety and security of the judiciary, court staff, the public, and persons in custody. There are local Sheriffs for every county of Nova Scotia, numbering over 200 in total. They work with up to 20,000 inmates and travel over 2 million kilometers in a year.

 

About Our Opportunity

 

The Sheriff Services Operations Centre is deigned to coordinate Sheriff Services activities provincially.   The Center provides overview to all Sheriff staff deployed in the field, on transport vehicles and travelling in and out of province.  The key role of the Dispatch Operator is to monitor staff in those roles to ensure their safety.  This includes being aware of the location of staff as they perform their functions, which include court security, prisoner transport and document services.   

 

As a Dispatch Operator, you will provide services such as dispatch, call notification, call answering, database queries and transport monitoring, as well as acting as a liaison with partner agencies.  You will be in contact with staff regularly in respect to scheduling, scheduling transport and fleet operations. 

 

Our Operator must frequently access multiple communications and information technology tools and databases (such as criminal court and summary offense databases) to support these activities through computer aided and radio dispatch systems.  You are also responsible for providing certain critical administrative duties and monitoring functions such as record-keeping and coordinating and recording transports of persons in custody both internal and external to the Province of Nova Scotia.  

 

About You

 

You will have a High School diploma plus five years related experience.  An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

 

As the successful candidate, you will have knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Office Word and Excel, Outlook and internet programs.  Geographical knowledge of Nova Scotia is an asset. 

 

Our ideal candidate will understand criminal legislation, law enforcement, legal documents, and the application of policy and procedures.  Experience in an Operations Center with related dispatch systems would be considered an asset in this role. 

 

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

 

Other Considerations

 

The successful candidate will be required to successfully completed a security clearance process which includes a criminal records check, employment references, driver’s abstract and child abuse registry check and credit check. 

 

Completion of pre-employment questionnaire will also be required prior to offer of employment.   

 

This position may require and enhanced level of security clearance.

 

Some shift work from early morning to late evening may be required. 


     

 

Pay Grade:  TE 15  

 

Salary Range:  $1,505.06 - $1,736.40 Bi-Weekly

 

This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU).
