About Us
Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change’s role is to protect the environment, human health through regulatory excellence, conservation, partnership and promotion. The department also coordinates provincial action on climate change and supports the advancement of the clean economy. To achieve this, we strive to develop legislation, regulations and policies, process notifications, applications, and approvals for regulated activities based on sound scientific knowledge and expertise.
Our goal is to educate, inspect and enforce to ensure compliance with legislation and regulations. We also proactively respond to environmental and human health risks and work to develop programs and deliver services to enhance protection in these areas.

About Our Opportunity
Working under direction of the Manager, Special Projects, you will work closely with and support the work plan of the Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee. You will assist various sub-committees with conducting research and preparing information and presentations for the Committee, as well as, educating staff. This will include assisting with the preparation of book and film club events, Breakfast Bites, spotlight information and submissions for the Deputy’s EDI quarterly newsletter. The student will provide consultations, training and support for EDI leaders across the Department on a variety of topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion. The student will support the engagement and development of staff leading to the success of the Committee and the Department.
Primary Accountabilities
In this position, you will work closely with the EDI Committee and sub-committees. Your primary accountabilities will include:
- Supporting project teams on research, analysis, and assessment of the status of the Department’s EDI plan. Examples could include:
- Assess the progress of implementation of the Department’s EDI plan;
- Determine the barriers to implementation for outstanding items on the plan;
- Recommend changes to the EDI plan and/or approaches to implementation based on the review above.
- undertake research and analysis to identify key areas of learning for NSECC staff
- provide consultations, training and support for EDI leaders across the Department on a variety of topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion
- support the engagement and development of staff leading to the success of the Committee and the Department.
- assist with performance measurement approaches and outcome-based evaluation activities to assess the accomplishments across the Department.
- provide support on key initiatives to ensure the EDI Committee and sub-committees achieve their objectives
- engage subject matter experts across Corporate Services
- collaborate with other Departments and Agencies whose policies, and programs intersect with our mandate.
This position may require you to perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
To be eligible for this position, you must currently be enrolled full-time in a related postsecondary program and returning to school in Fall 2025/Winter 2026. Related programs might include Social Sciences/Studies, Public Administration, Planning, Economics, Business, or another relevant post-secondary concentration. Enrollment in a graduate-level program (e.g. Master’s) is considered an asset. Knowledge of provincial diversity policies, programs and plans is also considered an asset.
Candidates should clearly indicate in their resume any completed course work and/or experience related to: diverse communities, equity, inclusion, and/or policy analysis.
In addition to the above, the following will be key for success within the position:
- Ability to work in a team environment and willingness to share ideas with colleagues.
- Possess organization, time management, and prioritization skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong research and critical thinking abilities.
- Proficient in using Microsoft office suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams
- Ability to effectively present material to large groups of people and are comfortable with public speaking
Additional Information
Please note, this is a student position with an expected start date of May 5, 2025 and an end date of August 29, 2025. This position can be extended if the student is eligible for an 8 month work term but the student must be returning to university by January 2026.
This position can be based out of Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change’s Halifax office, however there is flexibility to be located in the Regional/District Offices.

Pay Grade: HOURLY
Salary Range: $15.73 - $29.69 Hourly
