About Us


The Department of Infrastructure and Housing designs and constructs public buildings and delivers housing programs. The Department is responsible to deliver vertical infrastructure projects valued in excess of one million dollars or otherwise characterized as having heightened complexity and risks. The Department also promotes safe and secure communities by working with partners across the province to build strong, affordable, and suitable homes for Nova Scotians with low and moderate incomes. The Department also manages federal infrastructure programs to facilitate the delivery of eligible cost shared projects throughout Nova Scotia.

About Our Opportunity


Under the direction and supervision of the Coordinator, Project Management, as the Inspector Specialist you are responsible for providing inspection services for programs offered by Housing Nova Scotia to private homeowners, apartment owners, co-operatives and non-profit agencies and provincially owned buildings.


Primary Accountabilities


In this position you can expect to:


  • make recommendations on homeowner repairs;
  • complete new construction inspections;
  • prepare bid forms;
  • write technical reports;
  • prepare job estimates;
  • complete progress payments; and
  • ensure compliance with National / Provincial / Municipal building codes and standards.


You will also provide sound technical advice to owners and contractors ensuring sound building practices and workmanship.


Qualifications and Experience


Completion of a related technical trade or training in the area of specialty plus three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable. Building Technology / Construction Administration Technology / Building Technician qualifications would be considered an asset.


Supervisory experience in the inspection of residential and light commercial construction as well as knowledge of National / Provincial / Municipal building codes and standards are required.  The successful candidate requires effective communication skills (both written and verbal).


You must be computer literate and have working experience with software programs including Microsoft Office. Current knowledge of building codes, mechanical and electrical systems, working knowledge of construction and renovation of housing are required. Provision of technical advice is also necessary as is the ability to read construction plans and specifications and the ability to develop a strong working knowledge of housing programs offered. Also required is the ability to administer / oversee capital projects in the field, work with limited supervision, and be highly organized. Certification with the Building Inspector's Association of Nova Scotia would be an asset.


In addition to the above, you must be able to communicate effectively, both written and oral, with colleagues, clients and contractors as well as work well with others, valuing and supporting colleagues and clients as you work together to support program delivery. You are a problem solver who plans in advance to ensure colleagues and clients are informed and supported when issues or questions arise.


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions


Some of your time will be spent in a comfortable office environment but field inspections are a large component of the job. You can expect travel and complete site work in this position.

Pay Grade:  TE 17 - TE 22  

Salary Range:  $1,680.96 - $2,414.26 Bi-Weekly
