The Justice Officer 3 coordinates and manages court hearings held in all levels of Court and provides confidential secretarial, administrative and organizational support to the Judiciary.

About Our Opportunity

 

The Clerk, Justice Officer 3 coordinates and manages court hearings held in all levels of Court and provides confidential secretarial, administrative and organizational support to the Judiciary.  Duties include recording and transcribing all court proceedings by means of electronic recording equipment.

 

In your role as the clerk of the Courts you may be required to attend Court, perform Court-related functions including sitting and performing judicial and quasi-judicial as a Justice of the Peace.  With the Judge's direction you will be required to perform duties drafting and preparing complex orders arising from court hearing, along with reviewing and applying relevant acts, statutes, policies and procedures to all court documentation assigned under the Court Officials Act.

 

Some travel and overtime may be required. 

 

About You

 

Two years post-secondary education in a related discipline plus five years relevant experience in a legal environment; an acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience with exposure to the justice system may be acceptable.

 

You will have experience and competency in typing, word processing, recording and transcribing and other standard computer applications as required.  You will also possess excellent proofreading, spelling and grammar skills, and have a knowledge of general accounting principles.  You as the Clerk must have superior organizational abilities, be detail-oriented, have strong prioritization skills and the ability to combine speed and accuracy with attention to detail for a variety of tasks while under pressure to meet tight deadlines.  You must be able to work independently and as part of a team.

 

As the Justice Officer 3 you must be fair and impartial to all clients and complete all duties with a high degree of confidentiality, sensitivity, discretion and tact. You possess excellent interpersonal, assessment and communication skills are essential in order to deal with difficult people in complex and stressful situations.

 

As the successful candidate will have demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the Rules and Statutes that govern the courts as well as a sound working knowledge of legal documents, forms, court procedures and legal terminology.  The Justice Officer 3 will demonstrate a high level of initiative and problem-solving abilities and readily accept responsibilities.

 

Transcribing skills, training and/or experience in mediation and non-conflict resolution and bilingualism, with oral and written skills in English and French would be considered assets.

 

Candidates may be required to obtain training in Firearms Safety in relation to handling evidence and/or may be required to successfully complete the Nova Scotia Certified Transcribers qualification.

 

Other Considerations

 

An enhanced level of security screening will be required for external applicants.

 

As part of the screening and selection process a test will be administered.

Pay Grade:  CL 24  

 

Salary Range:  $1,918.00 - $2,089.00 Bi-Weekly

 

This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU).
