The Department of Lands and Forestry is responsible for the development, management, conservation and protection of forest, parks and wildlife resources and the administration of the province's Crown land. The Economic Development and Trade Division within the Renewable Resources Branch of Lands and Forestry provides coordination and leadership on policy, planning and program development including industry development and resource promotion, marketing, resource inventories and research, and the preparation of strategies and plans for the integrated development, management and conservation of the province's forests and wildlife resources.

About Our Opportunity


As the Manager of Innovation and Business Development, you will be part of the Economic Development and Trade Division team and will work directly with private sector businesses with a core focus on development of innovative technologies and processes within the natural resources industry.


The primary focus of your role will be to support the sustainable development of the province’s forest resources in order to develop and attract investment and trade, create high value jobs and grow the economy. You will achieve this by recommending changes to laws, regulations, policies and strategies to maintain the sustainability of our natural resources while facilitating economic development and reducing regulatory and administrative barriers to business. You will also assess/evaluate business plans, provide industry projections and conduct sector analysis.


You will also create and implement bio-economy action plans and programs to encourage innovative ways to increase the value of harvested forest products by creating higher-end processing and products which will improve economic, environmental, and social benefits for Nova Scotians.


You will work and liaise with three levels of Government on various projects and initiatives and will provide advice, recommendations and/or briefings to senior management and Government leaders. You will also influence the development, promotion and marketing of natural resource companies through liaison with CEOs and business development agencies on requests related to natural resources and the bio-economy.


In addition, you will ensure the effective management of human and financial resources by:

  • Respecting corporate human resources practices and setting/evaluating performance targets
  • Promoting diversity and a healthy workplace

  • Maintaining effective internal communication
  • Adhering to procurement guidelines and acquiring goods and services in the most cost-effective manner
  • Monitoring revenues and expenditures and managing/accurately forecasting budget requirements for the fiscal year


About You


As the successful candidate, you have a university degree in a related field (such as business, commerce, and/or science) with several years of related progressive experience in business, sector, or industry development or management experience in natural resource management field. An acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.


A professional business or financial designation such as CA or PMP will be considered an asset.

You have demonstrated experience managing teams, budgets and projects. You have previous experience working with industry reviewing and researching possible new technologies and alternate uses of sustainable natural resources. You also have the analytical ability to review the economic impact of proposed innovations and technologies and recommend strategies to effectively resolve problems and/or seize opportunities to facilitate industry growth and development.


You are confident, proactive, broadminded and engaged team leader. You are able to think outside the box and have the ability to make solid decisions in a fast-paced environment, with limited time and information. You have exceptional communication (written and verbal), presentation and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to develop strong business relationships with key stakeholders including industry groups, community organizations, Municipal, Provincial and Federal Government counterparts.


Fluency in French language would be considered an asset.

Other Considerations


Occasionally, this position may require travel within the province, Canada, or internationally.



Pay Grade:  EC 12 


Salary Range:  $2,918.00 - $3,647.00 Bi-Weekly
