The Nova Scotia Museum consisting of 28 museum sites, is the most decentralized museum in Canada. It is also one of the oldest provincial museums in the country. The Nova Scotia Museum is responsible for the provincial collection of over one million artifacts and specimens housed at museum sites and storage facilities across the province.

About Our Opportunity


The Manager of Collections leads a team of museum professionals and is responsible for oversight of the Collections Unit of the Nova Scotia Museum. The Manager of Collections is responsible for overall development and delivery of Collections Unit operations in accordance with legislation, policy and/or regulations. 


The Manager of Collections assumes a lead stewardship role in maintaining and enhancing the Nova Scotia Museum’s cultural, natural, and marine history artifact and specimen collection. The Manager also works in collaboration with Archives, Museums and Libraries staff to ensure the collections (comprised of over 1 million objects) represent the province’s collective cultural, natural and marine heritage and are relevant to interpretive programs and services.  This position is responsible for overseeing all collections-related processes including conservation and collections storage to ensure that the appropriate balance between preservation of the collection, and access to it, is maintained. 


The Manager works collaboratively across the Nova Scotia Museum system, Archives, Museum and Libraries and the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, as well as across government and with various stakeholders and sectors to build collaborative relationships and innovate.


The Manager of Collections reports to the Director, Nova Scotia Museum.

Primary Accountabilities


  • Accountable for strategic and operational leadership through direction, planning, evaluation, and implementation requiring experience with and knowledge of legislation, regulations, policies, and programs to support museum, departmental and government priorities.
  • Accountable for managing the financial and human resources of the Collections Unit in the Innovation, Collections, and Infrastructure Section (ICI) of Archives, Museums & Libraries (AML).
  • Ensures that effective collections management practices are maintained and supports the implementation of interpretive renewal. 
  • Oversees team of curators, registrars and collections professionals, developing work plans, collections strategies and procedures to ensure priorities are met and collections activities align with broader departmental goals (Culture Action Plan)"
  • Provides Ministerial briefings, handles media enquiries, develops speaking notes and provides direction to executive leadership
  • Interpretation of provincial and federal policy (ex. Collections Management Policy, Collections procedures, Special Places Protection Act, Canadian Revenue Agency Guidelines, Federal Heritage regulations), in dealing with project stakeholders, donors, and others.
  • Ensuring mechanisms are in place for managers to monitor and report operational issues on policies, planning and solutions for identified issues. 
  • Reviews programs and implements plans for efficiencies in storage and collections practices.
  • Provides Ministerial briefings, handles media enquiries, develops speaking notes and provides direction to executive leadership
  • Develops and manages budget for collections units
  • Promotes diversity and a healthy workplace, ensure respectful workplace standards are met.

Qualifications and Experience


To be successful in this role you have a University degree in a relevant discipline combined with 7 years of related work experience.  You also have knowledge and experience in collections management best practices and the demonstrated ability to clearly communicate collection-related issues to diverse audiences, this should be clearly demonstrated in your cover letter and resume.


Political and museum acumen is required.


You have strong interpersonal skills, and the demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate a large team of specialists, while valuing a diverse, and inclusive work environment.  You demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills and have a proven ability to be innovative, lead and execute addressing issues and demands with diplomacy and tact.  You have time management skills to successfully develop and manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines. You can develop and maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.


Success in this role includes being innovative and having a broad way of thinking, while staying current with respect to broader impacts (current events, legislative changes and national trends) and is diligent on how opinions and perspectives effect stakeholders and partners regarding collection issues.


Assets considered for this position:


  • Curatorial museum experience, or closely related experience along with knowledge of curatorial research
  • Experience in the heritage sector

Working Conditions


Must have valid driver’s license as some travel to locations (outdoors in natural and cultural environments, museums, collections storage facilities and private homes) across the province.

Pay Grade:  EC 12 

Salary Range:  $3,368.38 - $4,142.71 Bi-Weekly
