About Our Opportunity


Reporting to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health, the Provincial Medical Officer of Health (PMOH) is accountable for supporting DHW Public Health in the provision of leadership and expertise related to public health practice, specifically chronic disease and injury prevention, emergency preparedness, environmental health, health promotion, and health protection in Nova Scotia.  You will work with an integrated, interdisciplinary team to provide public health and preventive medicine leadership and direction for provincial public health strategies and approaches.


Primary Accountabilities


Through your leadership, mentoring and partnerships, the PMOH plays a key role in building and sustaining strategies to support disease and injury prevention, environmental health, health promotion and public health emergency preparedness initiatives and provides leadership and direction for provincial public health. We count on your expertise to:


  • Provide leadership, strategic direction, and content expertise to develop and implement comprehensive Public Health Strategies;
  • Provide public health physician expertise to Environment and Climate Change on issues pertaining to the interface of human health and the environment;
  • Support the development of enhanced knowledge and skills within the public health staff and associated professionals in DHW, NSHA and IWK through your expertise, mentorship and guidance;
  • Build a common approach to Public Health activities through collaboration with key government departments, community organizations, stakeholders, and private sector partners; and
  • Assist in bridging cross-departmental initiatives in efforts to create safe and healthy workplaces and community environments.


You may be required to represent Nova Scotia at provincial, federal, and territorial meetings, committees, and conferences to ensure policies, programs, standards and decisions related to the health of workplaces and public institutions reflect current evidence-based information and policy trends.

Qualifications and Experience


As our next Provincial Medical Officer of Health, you must be a physician licensable by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, and have a fellowship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent training). A minimum of five (5) years of experience in public health practice in the following areas: disease and injury prevention, environmental health, workplace health and safety, and/or emergency preparedness; providing mentorship and building teams; and working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders and partners across the health system is required.

You demonstrate an understanding of public health science, disease control, risk assessment and management, the framework of legislation, inter-sectoral relationships, government policy and general executive direction.  Critical to your success is progressive experience providing mentorship and building teams, and working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders and partners across the health system.

You are an innovative thinker with an ability to negotiate and communicate complex ideas and information in concise, meaningful ways.  You identify opportunities to encourage greater integration of programs and activities. Your decisiveness along with superior organizational and time management skills is essential to your success.  Often the decisions you make require risk assessments and your strong analytic skills. You must be comfortable responding to highly complex and often scientific/technical issues which will require your ability to make urgent decisions.

Working Conditions


  • Your normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day (and will require availability 24/7 during times of emergency). You may be required to work overtime on occasion and will be expected to participate in after hours coverage.
  • You primarily work within a comfortable office environment with regular travel at local, provincial, and national level to attend FPT meetings.
  • This position requires intense ability to concentrate and decipher complex information into decisions and easily understood concepts for senior management and public at large.
  • You are a key spokesperson for the health of the population, requiring you to interact with media, senior levels of government, and national/international forums.
  • You must be able to balance competing demands of individuals with those of the wellbeing of the whole community, and the decisions you make may be controversial (or unpopular), requiring your resilience.

Pay Grade:  MS 12 

Salary Range:  $8,368.46 - $9,701.35 Bi-Weekly
