About Our Opportunity


This exciting opportunity will allow you to apply highly skilled geomatics expertise and experience to support the Protected Areas Branch (PAB) within the Nova Scotia department of Environment. Protected Areas Branch plays an integral role in protecting the natural heritage of Nova Scotia and is responsible for planning and managing Nova Scotia's Wilderness Areas, Nature Reserves and Heritage Rivers, and for encouraging and supporting private land conservation.


You will be providing geomatics leadership to support the Challenge Fund initiative underway at Nova Scotia department of Environment. The Challenge Fund is a federally funded  collaborative project between the Province, land trusts, Mi’kmaq partners, and municipalities which aims to advance progress toward Canada’s biodiversity commitments: 

  1. Achieving Canada’s goal of protecting at least 17% of terrestrial areas and inland water by 2020;
  2. Enhancing the integrity and connectivity of Canada’s protected and conserved areas network;
  3. Establishing new Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) to support Indigenous engagement in conservation.


The primary role for this position will be the development of a geodatabase and enterprise system that facilitates tracking and reporting of Protected Areas in Nova Scotia incorporating multiuser and sharing capabilities. Additionally, you will develop training materials and facilitate training session(s) to ensure Protected Areas Branch staff have the knowledge and skills to maintain and interact with the new system. Secondarily, you will aim to create efficiencies in accounting, work with external datasets (e.g. land trust data, parks data), work with other departments to create efficiencies in data sharing (eg. Energy & Mines, Lands & Forestry), as well as create spatial data layers for non-GIS audiences (i.e., government, public).

Qualifications and Experience


You must have a bachelor’s degree and 7 years related experience in a relevant geomatics field or a diploma from an approved technical school in the field of Geomatics plus a minimum of 10 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  


The ideal candidate will have training and experience in the following: 


  • In depth knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, geographic data, and related principals.
  • Experience in designing, building, and maintaining Geodatabases.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • The ability to articulate and relay complex problems and technical information to a wide range of audiences, both technical and non-technical.
  • Excellent facilitation and collaboration skills.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of training material.


The following will be considered an asset: 


  • Experience and knowledge of data automation processes using Python, FME and Model Builder.
  • Experience and knowledge of spatial database design and modeling using Oracle/ SQL Server and ArcSDE.
  • Experience with versioning and workflow development.
  • Knowledge of the Nova Scotia’s Protective Areas/ Property Data and Cadastre
  • Experience in project management

This is a temporary position with an anticipated end date of March 31, 2021. 


Pay Grade:  PR 15  

Salary Range:  $2,575.57 - $3,139.57 Bi-Weekly
