About Our Opportunity
As the Sport and Recreation Lead, you will work with and report to the Manager of Sport and Recreation in the Community, Sport and Recreation Division. You will coordinate programs, services and collaborate on policies and strategies that support the sport and recreation sector in Nova Scotia.

As the lead, you will work horizontally across government to ensure your work is aligned with key government priorities such as The Canadian Sport Policy, the Shared Framework for Advancing Recreation in Nova Scotia and the ‘Let’s Get Moving’ Action plan for Physical Activity.
Primary Accountabilities
You will lead and collaborate on the planning, development, administration and evaluation of provincial policies, strategies and programs that aim to support and expand the capacity of the sport and recreation delivery systems. You will also provide guidance, support and expertise to provincial and national organizations, branch staff, other government departments, municipalities, and communities in the development of sport policies, plans, and initiatives.
You will lead/coordinate and participate in appropriate committees and initiatives that advance the promotion and delivery of recreation and sport opportunities. You will also work to advance Nova Scotia’s implementation of the Framework for Recreation in Canada, through the Shared Strategy for Advancing Recreation in Nova Scotia and the implementation of the Canadian Sport Policy
As the ‘Lead’ you will also:
- Play a lead role in identifying and removing barriers that prevent applicants of equity-deserving groups from accessing programs and services.
- Provide strategic advice to Provincial Sport and Recreation organizations on a wide variety of matters related to the delivery of their programs.
- Bring missing voices to the table and identify gaps.
- Help ensure the sport and recreation sectors are free from abuse and harassment.
- Work collaboratively with partners to advance goals related to support implementation of the National Sport Policy and Shared Framework for Recreation in Nova Scotia.
- Represent CCTH at provincial and/ or national tables and conversations related to Sport and Recreation.
- Manage system level projects related to sport and recreation
- Facilitate difficult conversations between stakeholders.
- Articulate the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in this role, you will have a bachelor’s degree in recreation/sport management, health promotion or community development plus six (6) years of related experience or an acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience in sport, recreation, physical activity and community development.
You will also have the following:
- Experience working within the Canadian sport, recreation or physical activity systems in a leadership role at a community, regional, provincial or national level.
- Comprehensive understanding of community, provincial, national and international trends in sport, recreation and physical activity.
- Understanding of the issues and challenges facing Nova Scotia’s communities and provincial organizations related to the provision of sport, recreation and physical activity.
- Understanding of the development of sport, recreation and physical activity strategies, initiatives, promotion and partnerships required to realize government priorities and goals.
- You demonstrate the ability to effectively build and develop strong relationships and maintain collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders (internal and external).
- Experience managing people and teams
- Experience managing a budget, cost center and/or financial practices
- You are collaborative, creative and forward thinking, challenge the status quo and provide ideas for future directions.
- Ability to identify issues, challenges and system gaps; formulate strategy; and operationalize sound implementation plans to address areas of priority.
- Strong group facilitation skills.
- Exceptional writing, oral communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to utilize information technology and online applications to capture, process, manage and share data and information.
- Strong understanding of government and sector, processes and networks are considered assets

Working Conditions
- Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day
- CCTH currently offers a flex system of 3 days out of the home, 2 days at home work environment
- Office is located in the Central Region (Halifax)
- May be required to work overtime on occasion

Pay Grade: PR 17
Salary Range: $3,107.16 - $3,649.33 Bi-Weekly
