About Us
The Protected Areas and Ecosystems Branch of Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change is responsible for the provinces Wilderness Areas and Nature Reserves, covering one third of the provinces Crown Land. The Branch is responsible for the operational management of these areas including: Signage, Trail and Asset Management. Operational management is an important part of ensuring public safety, environmental responsibility, protected area integrity, and the ongoing health of the provinces Protected Areas.
About Our Opportunity
Field Interns will assist with various activities associated with Nova Scotia’s protected areas program.
Primary Accountabilities
Duties include:
- Collecting data on conditions and locations of physical assets and human uses in protected areas,
- Visiting sites to ensure past work is still intact and in good condition as part of the Protected Areas Due Diligence Plans
- Assisting in inspections of trails or other assets.
- Assisting with marking trails or portages.
- Assisting in sign maintenance reporting.
- Collection and analysis of ecological data.
- Outreach
- Office work will include entering and categorizing field data, working with ArcGIS, assisting the GIS Analyst, and report writing.
Qualifications and Experience
The candidate must be enrolled as a full-time student and returning to school in the fall 2023 or next applicable semester of their education program.
A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable motor vehicle is required. To meet the expectations of the term it is required that the intern meet the following criteria:
- Must demonstrate experience in data collection, use of field tools and GPS and Compass.
- Experience in woodland navigation.
- Must demonstrate a general expertise with in working in the field in all types of conditions.
- Experience in Canoe, Kayak and ATV use and asset.
- Demonstrated ability to work with the public and run an outreach initiative.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to produce clear documentation, and explain complex and technical matters to laypersons in a clear and straightforward fashion

This position requires both the ability to work as a team player and to work independently. The successful candidate(s) will have a positive “can do” attitude and a passion for nature, the environment, and Nova Scotia’s protected areas.
Working Conditions
This position requires a certain level of physical fitness; successful candidates must be able to work in remote locations, traverse uneven and complicated terrain, and occasionally lift more than 40 lbs as part of regular work activities. Safety training will be provided.

This is a Summer Student opportunity based in Halifax, with an anticipated start date of June 2, 2025, end date of August 29, 2025.

Pay Grade: HOURLY
Salary Range: $15.73 - $29.69 Hourly
