The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is the oldest and largest Maritime Museum in Canada. The Museum is a valuable historical, cultural and educational institution. It is the largest site in Nova Scotia that collects and interprets various elements of Nova Scotia’s marine history.

 

Visitors are introduced to the age of steamships, local small craft, the Royal Canadian and Merchant Navies, World War II convoys and The Battle of the Atlantic, the Halifax Explosion of 1917, and Nova Scotia’s role in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster.

 

About Our Opportunity

 

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has a term opportunity for an individual who exemplifies service excellence and possesses excellent communication skills to be part of our Visitor Experience team (VET). They will be responsible for admission and reception duties, welcoming and orienting visitors, and addressing visitor inquiries in a courteous and timely manner.

 

As a Visitor Experience Team member, you are also involved in the development & presentation of high quality, entertaining, and informative interpretive programs that enhance the museum galleries and enrich visitor experience.

 

This position reports to the Curator of Education & Visitor Experience at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

Primary Accountabilities

 

  • Assist with the coordination of facility rentals, promotional activities and special events and other duties as required.
  • Maintain and operate Point of Sale (POS) systems for admissions, pass sales, and retail purchases.
  • Ensure special offers, discounts and cash handling procedures are completed in adherence with policies and procedures.
  • Offer consistently high-level customer service and assistance to all museum visitors
  • Actively take part in museum interpretation to the visiting public, providing engaging, accurate information about our stories through kits, demonstrations, tours, and activities 

Qualifications and Experience


As the ideal candidate, you have completed high school plus have 3 years of related experience in a retail or customer service environment. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.

 

You possess a knowledge and strong interest in the cultural and natural history of Nova Scotia and its Museums. You are a self-motivated individual who works well independently and participants fully in a team environment. You have exceptional interpersonal skills, are enthusiastic about engaging with diverse visitors, and are comfortable with public speaking. You value the concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of work.

 

You are proficient using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), have excellent organizational skills, and strong communication skills (written and verbal). Past experience with cash handling while using computer-based POS systems is required.

Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

 

Assets for this role

 

  • Training or certification in tourism, hospitality, retail and/or museum studies  
  • Experience in education or museum interpretation
  • Certification in first aid and WHMIS
  • Ability to speak French or additional languages.

Working Conditions

This is a Temp employment opportunity with anticipated end date of April 30, 2025.  The appointment status (‘term’, ‘temporary’ or ‘casual’) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate

Pay Grade:  CL 13  

Salary Range:  $1,501.11 - $1,633.95 Bi-Weekly
