About Our Opportunity


The Workplace Health, Medical Officer of Health (WHMOH) directly impacts the improved health and safety practices and policies in workplaces and public institutions, and overall improved health of the population.

In this role, you work with an integrated, interdisciplinary team and are accountable for supporting the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health (OCMOH) in the provision of leadership and expertise related to healthy workplaces including communicable disease prevention, occupational health, chronic disease and injury prevention, and health promotion functions in Nova Scotia workplaces and public institutions.


Primary Accountabilities


Through your leadership, mentoring and partnerships, the WHMOH plays a key role in building and sustaining strategies to support health promotion (including mental health promotion), disease and injury prevention and health protection initiatives within workplaces and public institutions. We count on your expertise to:


  • Provide leadership, strategic direction, and content expertise to develop and implement comprehensive Public Health Strategies;
  • Support the development of enhanced knowledge and skills within the public health staff and associated professionals in DHW, NSHA and IWK through your expertise, mentorship and guidance;
  • Build a common approach to Public Health activities through collaboration with key public health departments, stakeholders, and private sector employers; and
  • Assist in bridging cross-departmental initiatives in efforts to create safe and healthy environments.


You will represent Nova Scotia at provincial, federal, and territorial meetings, committees, and conferences to ensure policies, programs, standards and decisions related to the health of workplaces and public institutions reflect current evidence-based information and policy trends.

Qualifications and Experience


As our next Workplace Health, Medical Officer of Health, you must be licensable by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, and have a fellowship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent training). A minimum of five (5) years of experience in public health or occupational health is required.

You have demonstrated experience developing and implementing workplace health and safety strategies with a particular focus on prevention. Critical to your success is progressive experience providing mentorship and building teams, and working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders and partners across the health system.

You are an innovative thinker with an ability to negotiate and communicate complex ideas and information in concise, meaningful ways.  You identify opportunities to encourage greater integration of programs and activities. Your decisiveness along with superior organizational and time management skills is essential to your success.  Often the decisions you make require risk assessments and your strong analytic skills. You must be comfortable responding to highly complex and often scientific/technical issues which will require your ability to make urgent decisions.

Working Conditions


  • Your normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day (and will require availability 24/7 during times of emergency). You may be required to work overtime on occasion.
  • You primarily work within a comfortable office environment with regular travel at local, provincial, and national level to attend FPT meetings.
  • This position requires intense ability to concentrate and decipher complex information into decisions and easily understood concepts for senior management and public at large.
  • You are a key spokesperson for the health of the population, requiring you to interact with media, senior levels of government, and national/international forums.
  • You must be able to balance competing demands of individuals with those of the wellbeing of the whole community, and the decisions you make may be controversial (or unpopular), requiring your resilience.

Pay Grade:  MS 12 

Salary Range:  $8,244.79 - $9,557.98 Bi-Weekly
