About Us

Maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges. During the winter season, our Highway Operations Division operates 24/7; managing various programs and activities throughout our province, including snow and ice control services.

This is your opportunity to support and ensure safe road network conditions throughout your assigned area.

About Our Opportunity

As the Winter Supervisor of Maintenance, you are responsible for supervising snow and ice control activities. We rely on your expert planning and organizational skills to assist in the effective use of equipment and resources.

You provide direction, technical support, and daily supervision, all the while monitoring and maintaining department levels of service. You will assist in the planning and coordination of routes, staffing, equipment assignments and repair, and oversee work on job sites. You ensure stocks of road salt and traction sand are replenished daily. In addition, you may conduct preliminary site investigations, prepare cost estimates, and inspect maintenance contracts.

You are solutions and client orientated; providing excellent service to the public and stakeholders.

About You

The successful applicant will meet one of the following requirements:

  • High School and 4 years of related experience (2 of the 4 years must be in snow and ice control services)
  • A Civil Engineering Technology Diploma plus 2 years of experience in snow and ice control services
  • An acceptable equivalent of education, training, and experience

You have successfully supervised a team to achieve operational requirements by gaining their trust and respect. This aligns with your background in promoting a safe, healthy and engaged work culture.

Consistently, you maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service. Your professional communication skills, both oral and written, are critical in this role.

Experience in a unionized environment and working with time reporting systems and/or work order generation would be considered assets.

As a multi-tasker, you effectively problem solve and make sound decisions in fast-paced environments with competing priorities.

Other Considerations

This opportunity is for a 17-week position, with an anticipated end date of March 30, 2019.  This position is subject to shift work and frequent travel. You will regularly work in excess of scheduled hours and on weekends, often during extreme winter weather conditions. You may be required to be on 24-hour call during snow and ice control season.

A valid driver’s license is required. Please attach a current driver’s abstract with your application.
