About Us


The Fleet Services Division of the Department of Public Works is recruiting for Certified Truck and Transport Mechanics to join the Fleet Services team in Miller Lake.


This is your opportunity to become part of the team who are pivotal in ensuring the Public Works Fleet is running smoothly and safely.  Without our Mechanic’s proactive measures; equipment issues or failures could lead to an interruption of services provided. As the Mechanic, you are one of our key team players who support the overall safety and efficiency of our provincial road network.


About Our Opportunity


As the Truck and Transport Mechanic, you will have the opportunity to work on our wide variety of equipment that build and maintain our provincial roads, highways, and bridges. You will work on everything from powerful Vohl Snow Blowers that throw snow 100 yards, formidable Oshkosh plows that keep the Highlands open, to new state of the art twin steer twin plow Mack snow plows that utilize the latest and greatest technology to clear the Cobequid pass.


Primary Accountabilities


Using your industry knowledge and technical expertise, you will not only repair, rebuild, and make adjustments to our fleet, but also determine the reasoning for equipment malfunctions.  To minimize such occurrences, preventative maintenance is a critical component in this role.


We will ensure you have the right tools to do the job, and there is nothing more important than your safety.  We offer you a clean work space, and your ideas and input are valued and considered.  Your coveralls and other personal protective equipment (PPE) are provided, as are the larger shared tools available in our fully stocked inventory tool room. We also have an annual footwear and tool reimbursement allowance.


There is plenty of overtime opportunity available when you can swing it, along with opportunities to expand your knowledge and abilities.


Qualifications and Experience


You have completed High School and have an Interprovincial Red Seal Certificate in the Truck and Transport Trade, along with five (5) years of diversified mechanical experience. You must be licensed as an Official Motor Vehicle Inspection Tester for classes 1, 2, 4, and 5.


A valid Nova Scotia driver's license with Air Brakes and acceptable driving record is required. Candidates selected for interviews will be asked to bring a copy of their current Driver's Abstract.


A Provincial Certificate of Qualification in Heavy Duty Equipment and Air Conditioning Certification are considered assets, along with knowledge of computer controlled diagnostic technology and computer competency. Training and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, First Aid and WHMIS are further assets to be considered.


As the ideal candidate, you consistently demonstrate initiative in your role; remaining up-to-date in changes to equipment, methods and technology within the mechanical field. Strong communication skills are necessary for the times when you will be helping staff diagnose and resolve equipment issues. You must also be able to work effectively with minimal supervision as most of your time will be spent working independently. Professionalism and a high standard for client and customer service is essential in this role.

Working Conditions


Work is performed in a mechanical repair environment occasioned by noise, smoke and gas fumes and, at times, adverse weather conditions while operating in a field environment. Considerable standing, lifting, carrying and moving about is a requirement of this position.

There are two (2) opportunities available.


This opportunity is for a 52-week Year-Round position – the duties of which are full time and continuous in nature.


Most of your work will be located at Miller Lake, but you will be required to travel and work in other mechanic shops throughout the province as required.


You must bring your own mechanical tools.

Pay Grade:  MECHANIC  

Salary Range:  $29.25 Hourly
