The Fleet Services Division of the Department of Public Works is recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to provide leadership for the development, implementation, and maintenance of various programs, policies and standards which support safe vehicle fitness and operations on the public highway system of the Province. Our Fleet Services Division plays a pivotal role in helping our public return home safety.

About Our Opportunity

 

As the Senior Engineer, you are responsible for the design and build of the provincial snow plow fleet.  You will supervise a dedicated and energetic staff of mechanics, welders, and engineer support professionals, to construct the machines responsible for keeping winter off our roads.  You work with all areas of the province to support the unique challenges that arise; helping achieve the Department’s objectives.

Primary Accountabilities

 

Using your engineering expertise, you will identify vehicle and equipment safety issues and develop recommendations for action based on industry standards and practices.  You will oversee our Capital Fleet Program, and ensure that Department equipment such as snow plows, loaders, and graders are all built to high quality standards.

 

You will address the use of after-market and add-on vehicle equipment, and of retrofitted vehicles; respond to inquiries and complaints from the industry and the public; and participate in industry and governmental committees regarding vehicle and equipment safety standards.

 

Your project management skills, along with solid planning and organization skills, will ensure budgets and timeline targets of the Department are achieved. All the while, your ability to work with and inspire a team will ensure your staff will continuously go above and beyond the call of duty to achieve their goals.

Qualifications and Experience

 

 A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required along with a minimum of six (6) years of related experience in designing and detailing of mechanical projects. You must be (or meet the requirements to be) actively registered as a Full Member (P. Eng) with Engineers Nova Scotia (ENS).

 

You will need a valid driver’s license in good standing, and ability to travel throughout the province. Frequent travel to mechanical branches, bases, and other work sites is a component of this position. 

 

You have demonstrated knowledge and an understanding of automotive engineering principles and standards, as well as vehicle and equipment standards and vehicle dynamics analysis.  You work diligently to achieve goals and meet strict deadlines, and utilize your project management skills to lead effective and efficient department programs.  

 

Experience working with trucks and heavy equipment along with designing modifications to machinery and equipment is desirable.  Experience with legislative processes and competence in the use of computer aided design are considered assets. Demonstrated knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Act, and associated regulations (Motor Vehicle Inspection Regulations, Standard of Vehicle Equipment Regulations and Commercial Vehicle Maintenance Standards Regulations) are further assets to be considered. 

 

You are analytical and resourceful in nature. You are also a creative and innovative problem solver who develops solutions. This position demands an individual who manages timelines, resources, and budgets and ensures all three constraints are met. A high standard of verbal and written communication skills is essential with working with a diversity of stakeholders.

Working Conditions

 

This position has a combination of office and field work. Field work occurs in adverse weather conditions and normal hazards associated with construction sites and working with or near heavy equipment are present.

This position will require climbing, working at heights and/or working within confined spaces.

You must be able to work under adverse conditions in times of emergency and sometimes overtime may be required.

Additional Information

 

This is a Term employment opportunity with an anticipated end date of September 26, 2025. The appointment status Term is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade:  PR 18  

Salary Range:  $3,231.58 - $3,800.42 Bi-Weekly
