About Us


The Asset Information Services (AIS) is a division of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (TIR). At AIS, we provide technical support to the department by collecting, maintaining, and distributing asset data in a method best suited for decision makers. AIS provides coordination and information to the department and public, with relation to the use of provincial roads.


About Our Opportunity


The successful candidate will be assisting the AIS team, with the collection and maintenance of provincial geographically referenced transportation asset information. A typical work day will include searching for culverts along Nova Scotia’s road network, collecting information from the culverts, and sharing the information collected with AIS to compile into a provincial dataset.


You will spend 90% of the work week in outside conditions, walking long distances while working with highly technical devices. When not able to work outside due to weather or other extreme conditions, you will be working in an office environment using computers and other office equipment, maintaining asset datasets.


We offer a week-long training event at the beginning of the employment period which will provide you will all the required training, including courses in:


  • Standard First Aid;
  • Traffic Control Person;
  • Temporary Workplace Signer and Hazard Assessment; and
  • data collection specific training.


We will also provide you with all required technical and protective equipment, and you even get to keep the boots we provide you when your summer work ends. Mileage and meals will be provided where work site distance from the assigned base supports the claim.


About You


As the ideal candidate you are enrolled in a full-time geomatics program in an accredited post-secondary school in the fall (or next applicable semester for the education program). Other related degree programs will be considered. As travel is required for this position, you must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable motor vehicle. Candidates are asked to include a current driver’s abstract with the application. Proficiency in navigating in a digital mapping environment, working with Microsoft Office 365, and Microsoft Windows 7 or later are essential.


A working knowledge of transportation asset management is an asset. Previous experience in data collection, working with GIS solutions, and database management are preferred assets to be considered.


As the ideal candidate, you demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing. This position will require you to have a high level of concentration, a high regard for detail, along with the ability to work independently within a larger team.


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Pay Grade:  HOURLY 


Salary Range:  $15.55 - $25.34 Hourly
