About Our Opportunity


The Justice Officer 3 is responsible for exhibit control, scheduling and monitoring cases, and the preparation and distribution of court orders and dockets.  You are also accountable for document management, statistical data collection, and general accounting.  As a Justice Officer 3, you will scrutinize documents, apply relevant Acts, statutes, policies and procedures and determine corrective measures where necessary. 


In this role, you will train and mentor new staff in a day to day operational activities, liaise with the Judiciary and legal profession, schedule Court cases and respond to inquiries and information requests from the public.


As a Justice Officer 3, you may be required to attend Court, perform Court-related functions and perform the duties of a Justice of the Peace.  Your duties are performed in accordance with and as assigned under the Court Officials Act.  Some travel may be required.


About You


Two years post-secondary education in a related discipline plus five years relevant experience in a legal environment; an acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience with exposure to the justice system will be acceptable.


For this position, experience and competency in typing, word processing and other standard computer applications are required.  The successful candidate will also possess excellent proofreading, spelling and grammar skills, and have a knowledge of general accounting principles.  The Clerk must have superior organizational abilities, be detail-oriented, have strong prioritization skills and the ability to combine speed and accuracy with attention to detail for a variety of tasks while under pressure to meet tight deadlines.  They must be able to work independently and as part of a team.


The Justice Officer 3 must be, and appear to be, fair and impartial to all clients and complete all duties with a high degree of confidentiality, sensitivity, discretion and tact.  Excellent interpersonal, assessment and communication skills are essential to deal with difficult people in complex and stressful situations.


As the successful candidate, you will demonstrate understanding and knowledge of the Rules and Statutes that govern the courts as well as a sound working knowledge of legal documents, forms, court procedures and legal terminology.  The Justice Officer 3 will demonstrate a high level of initiative and problem-solving abilities and readily accept responsibilities.


Non-conflict resolution skills and bilingualism, with oral and written skills in English and French would be considered assets.


Candidates may be required to obtain training in Firearms Safety in relation to handling evidence and/or may be required to successfully complete the Nova Scotia Certified Transcribers qualification.


Other Considerations


This position will require an enhanced level of security screening for external applicants.

Pay Grade:  CL 24  


Salary Range:  $1,918.30 - $2,089.57 Bi-Weekly
