As Canada’s only provincial museum dedicated to the story of work and workers, the Museum of Industry offers the largest galleries of exhibits in Atlantic Canada. As we tell the stories of how Nova Scotia changed as a result of industrial work, we specialize in hands-on fun for families. In our exhibits, you can find everything from one of the oldest steam locomotives in the world, to a climb-on colorful Kid’s train. Visitor experiences also include special exhibits, programs, events and school trips.
About Our Opportunity
Our opportunity with the Museum of Industry is a perfect fit for someone who enjoys having a meaningful conversation with visitors of all ages and diverse backgrounds. Our goal is to promote and engage visitors in understanding Nova Scotia’s unique cultural and natural history through interpretive programs and events.
Visitors to our facility are there to learn about the Museum’s collection and the cultural and natural history of Nova Scotia which you will enable through hands-on, interactive, well-researched activities. This position also delivers the Museum’s school and public interpretive programs, demonstrations, events, workshops, site tours and presentations.
As a Heritage Assistant, you will assist with the delivery of educational programming to school-aged children and perform the duties of a gallery interpreter. You will be responsible for providing orientation, information, and interpretive services to visitors, helping to lead public programs, demonstrations, and tours. You will support the Reception desk, welcoming visitors and processing admissions and gift shop sales. You will also perform general gallery maintenance and cleaning functions, provide security for artifacts, and perform other duties as required in support of Museum operations.
The successful candidate will be a student in a relevant field like Museum Studies, Canadian Studies, History, Education, or in programs with a focus on human culture such as Mi’kmaw Studies and Anthropology. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, specifically the ability to develop positive interactions with visitors and provide visitor service to a high standard. Familiarity with computers, including e-mail, Internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, is required. The candidate must be self-motivated, able to work with limited supervision, and able to work as part of a team. Physical requirements include crouching and moving around for extended periods of time, exposure to dust, and the use of common cleaning fluids and ink. Previous experience in public speaking is an asset. Previous experience in heritage interpretation, hospitality and tourism, recreational / educational programming or working with children are assets. Fluency in English is required.
The Museum of Industry is a part of the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. Recruitment and selection are carried out with the Public Service Commission. Qualifications and Experience
The candidate must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution, having preferably completed at least two years of study. Must be registered in the Young Canada Works (YCW) on-line candidate inventory (https://young-canada-works.canada.ca) and meet the eligibility criteria of the program.
Students enrolled in Museum Studies, Canadian Studies, History, Education and other related fields are preferable.
