About Our Opportunity


As the Forestry Geographic Information System (GIS) Programmer/Analyst, you will be the technical lead on the forest information systems required to support Forest research, management, and planning initiatives. 

Primary Accountabilities


You will be responsible for designing, building, and administering GIS tools and processes to collect, maintain and provide access to forest management and research information within the Department of Lands and Forestry in collaboration with other IT and forestry professionals.  The design and management of supporting database systems will be part of your responsibilities.

 

You will use your GIS programming skills to develop scripts, tools, and interfaces to automate the collection, processing and quality control of digital information submitted for various departmental initiatives. You will design and complete routine quality control procedures on information entered into forestry databases and ensure that the database meets applicable specifications and standards. Within the Forestry Division, you will work closely with the Forest Management and Planning Section, the Forest Inventory Section and the Regional Services Branch as well as forestry stakeholder groups.

 

This position reports to the supervisor of GIS and Forest Interpretation within Forest Inventory.

Qualifications and Experience


This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant Geomatics field along with 5 years related experience or graduation from an approved technical school in the field of geomatics with 8 hears related experience; an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.

 

This position requires the following:
 

  • Work experience developing GIS related tools using a modern programing language such as C# or Visual Basic. 
  • Work experience programming using the Python scripting language
  • Work experience editing the spatial features of geodatabases in ESRI ArcGIS 10.x or ArcGIS Pro
  • Training or experience in applying complex SQL commands to a modern fully relational database.
     

Additional assets include:
 

  • Experience translating code from legacy languages such as Fox Pro
  • Knowledge of the information requirements of forest management

 

Additional consideration will be given to candidates with documented training/education in computer programming. 

 

Candidates will have demonstrated independent good judgement and decision making, professional initiative and problem solving, skills development, time and priority management, project planning and the ability to communicate and collaborate with colleagues and clients effectively and respectfully. Candidates will have experience documenting and communicating results, procedures, and programming code. Candidates will also have demonstrated an ability to meet deadlines and maintain accuracy and productivity.

 

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

  • Occasional requirement to travel by foot over rough terrain, generally in fair weather.

Pay Grade:  PR 13  

Salary Range:  $2,384.94 - $2,899.09 Bi-Weekly
