Who we are


Wood Street Centre-Residential provides community-based placement options for children and youth in the care of the Minister of Community Services or Mi’kmaw Family & Children’s Services with moderate to severe emotional and behavioral problems, and who require a higher level of supervision and structure than is available in family foster care.


A day in the life of a Teacher


Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Director, you will provide an education program to children/youth at the Wood Street Centre - Residential Treatment. You are responsible for the development and implementation of an individualized educational program for each resident that adheres to the guidelines set out by the Department of Education (DOE), while at the same time addressing the individual treatment and learning needs of the resident in a residential treatment setting.


You will provide educational and treatment services, along with facilitating, co-facilitating, and/or assisting with psycho educational (Social and Emotional Learning) programs. This position requires you to be flexible and creative in meeting the special needs of the children/youth and to have a solid practical knowledge of elementary, junior, senior high school curricula. You will develop and deliver an educational program that teaches academic, social and personal development.


You may also be required to facilitate and supervise community-based, curriculum-related field trips. You will ensure the application of Accountability Case Management (ACM) with a goal to meet identified resident needs. Youth workers are present in the classroom and participate with the students under the direction of the teacher.


You are part of an interdisciplinary team that is accountable for the safety and security of youth, staff and visitors, and provides appropriate interventions in response to managing harmful/aggressive youth behaviour.


What makes a great Teacher


You must possess a valid Nova Scotia Teacher’s Certificate and have a minimum of two years' classroom experience. Preference will be given to special education experience and to work experience within a residential treatment setting. You will also have the knowledge and skills required to work with children/youth with behaviourial and/or emotional disorders and who demonstrate aggressive behaviour. A strong background in subject areas, practical knowledge of teaching methods, developing Individual Program Plans (IPP), evaluation of children’s/youth’s learning, classroom management and an ability to communicate ideas and information to students would all be considered assets.

Pay Grade:  PR 07 - PR 17  


Salary Range:  $1,797.80 - $3,272.26 Bi-Weekly
