Survey Technician 1 (Survey Assistant) Designated Position, Term, WAVERLEY
Competition # 21272
Nova Scotia is rich in natural resources – including biodiversity, forests, geological resources, provincial parks and the land we manage. The Department of Lands and Forestry is responsible for the development, management, conservation and protection of forest, mineral, parks and wildlife resources and the administration of the province's Crown land. Together we are working with Nova Scotians to build a better future through sustainable natural resource management as we all benefit from the natural health and wealth of the province.
As the Survey Assistant you will work as a member of the survey team responsible for: assisting the team in field survey assignments; routinely performing land survey work in the field; working as rod person or instrument person locating, searching for and verifying corners, lines, boundaries and monuments of real property; and collecting, compiling, and recording field data.
You will ensure the safe and proper function of equipment, tools and supplies needed for field work. When called upon in emergency situations, you will also participate in forest fire suppression and search and rescue operations.
Primary areas of responsibility will include survey work to support the land title and land ownership issues for residents who live in five specific communities within Nova Scotia.
As the Survey Assistant you will work under the direct supervision of the Crown Land Survey and/or the Senior Survey Technician.
This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a certificate in surveying technology or equivalent; an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.
As the ideal candidate you have basic knowledge of land surveying practices, methods and field techniques along with a working knowledge of modern survey devices, conventional equipment and other electronic surveying equipment and tools.
You possess sound judgement to recognize and distinguish survey evidence and station position in the field. You have sound communication (written and verbal) skills along with attention to detail to ensure your work is recorded in a legible and systematic manner.
It is considered an asset if you have knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the workplace.
This is a designated position restricted to persons belonging to the African Nova Scotian Community.
Please note frequent travel is required throughout the province on this project. Work outside of regular working hours, i.e. evenings and weekends is required.
This is a term opportunity with an anticipated end date of October 31, 2020; however, the position status (“term”, “temporary” or “casual”) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.
