‘What Will You Do’: 

  • You will work as part of a team of professionals to help clients and build the Nova Scotia agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and aquaculture industries.
  • You will explore and learn about Lending, Risk and Financial teams within Crown Lending.
  • You will have a chance to work with clients in all three industries and meet with client and potential clients, you will learn about their businesses and visit their farms, forestry or seafood operations.

About us:

The Regional Services Division provides extension (advisory) services for farmers, agri-food businesses, and rural organizations to support the long-term sustainable growth of the agriculture sector! We all have to eat, and we want to ensure that we produce as much food as we can in Nova Scotia, while protecting the environment and keeping farm workers and consumers safe.

One of our key initiatives is Agriculture in the Classroom – Nova Scotia. This program supports teachers and students in learning where their food comes from, the importance of agriculture to our province and the rewarding careers available in the sector.

‘What Will You Do’: You will be working with the Agriculture in the Classroom team to prepare resources to send to classrooms, such as packing resource kits, compiling teacher contact lists, organizing events for teachers and students, and researching new resources. You may also support Agricultural Extension workers by collecting samples of plant materials, soil, and insects from farms.

Remote/In-person: You will be working in a team setting with staff in our Bible Hill office as well as in our five other regional offices. Much of the work will be done in an office setting but there will be occasional trips to farms, and you may be involved in collecting samples of plant material, soil, insects, etc.

What Will You Do:  

 

Two key projects:

  • Collections Management support: Under the supervision of the Curator of Collections, the student will document a body of 3-D objects.  They will create an Excel spreadsheet of information, including documentation of images taken, a description of each object, the initial condition of each object, measurements, and its location in temporary storage. This work will help the Curator of Collections determine which objects are best suited for the Museum’s Collection, and which may be better suited to other museum collections, etc.
  • Education and Public Programming support: Under the supervision of the Curator of Education and Public Programming, the student will engage with visitors to explain and interpret the Museum’s exhibits. The student will work as an interpretation assistant in our Pre-Industrial Exhibit, learning the significance of the artifacts, displays, and stories, and then sharing that information with visitors.

Additional Information: 

The student will be working on two projects and will rotate between the two; one with the Curator of Collections and one with the Curator of Education and Public Programming.

 

Possible Career Paths: The Assistant will increase their awareness of Nova Scotia's industrial history and will also gain experience in the use of spreadsheets, documentation, interpretation, and the occupations and operations of a mid-size museum. These skills will greatly enhance the student’s ability to find future work in the culture and heritage sectors, and most specifically in public education, visitor service and collections management.

You will work with our Aquatic Animal Health Unit staff to support the provision of veterinary and laboratory services to the provinces aquaculture sector. In your role with our team, you will participate in the development of the aquaculture sector by supporting the delivery of veterinary and laboratory services through provincial regulatory programs. You will work within the provincial pathology building in both the necropsy suite and the laboratory setting. Site visits to finfish and shellfish aquaculture sites would be involved in this role, as well as gaining experience in the administration and development of Aquatic Animal Health regulatory programs.

 

Remote/In-person:

You will work out of the provincial pathology laboratory in Truro, where the Aquatic Animal Health Unit staff have office space. This laboratory building is a shared space with the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture Pathology and Laboratory services staff. You will have the opportunity to work independently on specific projects/tasks and carry out veterinary field work that will take you to locations within various Nova Scotian communities.

As the Junior Aquaculture Administration Officer, you will gain practical administrative and operational experience and receive training and mentorship from highly qualified public service professionals. You’ll have the opportunity to visit aquaculture operations, learn about the aquaculture site review and approval process and participate in office, lab and field work duties related to the environmental monitoring program.

There may also be opportunities to be an occasional crew member on our boat, the Ocean Prosperity, for local aquaculture site visits.

There will be opportunity to learn about the role of government in regulation, as well as how other provincial and federal departments work together.

What Will You Do:

You will work with our Marine Services Division to support the sustainable development of our provinces seafood sector, and with information gathering and stakeholder relations needed to deliver specific programs.  In your role with our team, you will help to encourage and support innovation and development in the sector, including green technology.

More specifically, you will work closely with the Division’s Coastal Advisory Unit, which provides the Department with strategic analysis on coastal and marine issues that impact or overlap the Department’s seafood development mandate, such as climate change, marine conservation, coastal and marine pollution.

About us: Here at Audit & Enforcement we:

Conduct a variety of tax-auditing, inspections/enforcement, and verification activities of varying degrees of complexity; by way of office and/or field audits of vendors (manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers) and consumers to ensure compliance with the Revenue Act and Regulations in the areas of fuel, tobacco, vaping products, and sales tax, as well as under the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), International Registration Program (IRP), Petroleum Product Pricing Act and Your Energy Rebate Program. We also adjudicate permit applications in relation to fuel tax (both taxable and tax exempt), tobacco tax (both taxable and tax exempt), bulk vendors, bulk plants, vape wholesalers and stand alone vape retailers. 

 

‘What Will You Do’:  

Update and automate policy and procedures manuals as necessary.

use Microsoft teams to create groups and related channels to automate spreadsheets used for revenue reporting and reconciliation purposes.

aide in data analysis using excel, Power BI and or IDEA.

Possible Career Paths:  Students graduating university with a BComm or BBA with a major in accounting and three years of related experience would be qualified to work as an Auditor I-III with Audit & Enforcement. The exposure to the legislation we administer allows students to gain valuable knowledge that is transferable across many departments within government (including but not limited to) the Department of finance, Government Accounting, Collections, and the Business Registration Unit.  This experience is also a pathway to a career in Law Enforcement in a regulatory environment.

The Information Access and Privacy Services Division (IAP Services) within the Nova Scotia Department of Service Nova Scotia and Internal Services provides services in relation to accessing information and privacy protection under the authority of the following legislation and related regulations:

 

  • Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPOP)
  • Personal Information International Disclosure Protection Act (PIIDPA)
  • Privacy Review Officer Act (PRO)

 

IAP Services processes access to information requests from members of the public and provides advice and direction in relation to privacy issues.

 

IAP Services’ mandate is to provide leadership, strategic direction, policy advice, and operational support to the government and other public bodies to help comply with the FOIPOP Act.

 

What you will do:

Work on organizing records into packages that form access requests.  A project to create a year-end summary for each client department on the results of their past year in responding to access requests.  You will also be doing some jurisdictional research relating to privacy issues to create a summary of the different options that are found.

What you will do:

  • Digitizing Geographic hardcopy records (such as written descriptions of Geographic Names and location, Aerial Photography Flight reports, and various maps)

 

  • Organizing digital files so they are easily searchable including an organized file structure, file naming and where possible adding search words, all aimed at assisting staff to search for and find required information.

 

  • Quality Control of mapping products including review, logging errors such as text placement, text overlaps, or missing text.

 

  • Organizing hard copy maps and airphotos in our map library filing system.

 

Remote/In-person:

Two to Five days a week in office.  Remote work may be possible.

Possible Career Paths: Many Universities offer training in Geomatics, and the Centre for Geographic Sciences in Lawrencetown, NS offers a wide range of geomatics training such as:

  • Certificate in Geographic Information Systems and Geomatics Engineering Technology
  • Graduate certificates in Forest Geomatics and Biometrics Technology, Geographic Information Systems, Geospatial Data Analytics, Marine Geomatics and Remote Sensing
