Primary Accountabilities

 

As the Division Raker, you complete any of the following combination of duties in the maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation process of the Department’s road network including: assessing assigned areas for deterioration and determining the areas to be repaired; preparing asphalt deformities for repair; estimating the required amount of asphalt to complete the repair; assessing the type of fill material to be used; filling deformities with asphalt and raking the areas for rolling; and raking and feathering asphalt for a smooth finish.

 

The successful candidate may also be required to preform the duties of other job positions as outlined in Group I, II, III of CUPE Collective Agreement for which they are qualified.

Qualifications and Experience

 

Grade 11 plus two (2) years of cumulative work experience with a patching crew; or an acceptable equivalent of education and experience.

 

Good eyesight is required to perform visual inspection of project sites. Continuous mental concentration while performing raking duties is required.

 

The following training is considered an asset: Temporary Workplace Signage, First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Anti-Stripping, Confined Space, and other construction-related training. Knowledge of surveying, road construction, building structures, OH&S Act and Regulations and the ability to operate small power tools/portable equipment are further assets to be considered.

 

You must be organized and have the ability to work with limited supervision, exhibit good judgment and have good customer and client service skills when interacting with the general public, and work collaboratively as an effective team player.

 

You will be assessed on the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, interview, and reference checks.

Equivalency

 

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Equivalencies may include, but are not limited to:

 

  • At least 3 years of related experience.

Working Conditions

 

This position is physically demanding. Work is performed in an outdoor environment at highway construction sites, on heavily travelled highways and in rough isolated areas with inherent exposure to dust/dirt, equipment noise, hot asphalt, and extreme weather temperatures. This position requires the ability to climb, lift and carry various equipment throughout construction sites.

Additional Information

 

You will begin your workday by reporting to your assigned work location in the Colchester Construction Area (Zones 14, 15 and 16). It is the responsibility of every employee on the Special Work team to make their arrangements to report to the assigned work location. The employer reserves the right to provide transportation with Department vehicles.

 

This opportunity is for a special work crew as per Article 15 of the CUPE Collective Agreement.

 

There is one (1) position that will be based out of the Colchester Construction Area including Maintenance Zones 14, 15 and 16.

 

The Special Work Crew does not have a defined works period. The asphalt work will depend on available funding. It is anticipated that work will take place over the summer maintenance season in any given year depending on asphalt work plans/priorities and available funding.

Pay Grade:  DV RAKER  

Salary Range:  $26.42 Hourly
