Primary Accountabilities

 

As the Equipment Operator, you are responsible for the efficient operation of various types of equipment used in the construction and maintenance of Provincial infrastructure. Typical duties include the general maintenance of equipment, pre and post trip inspections, and daily logs as required.

 

The successful candidate may also be required to perform the duties of other job positions as outlined in Groups I, II and III of the CUPE Collective Agreement for which they are qualified.

Qualifications and Experience

 

Applicants must have been declared competent as an OPTP operator by Department of Public Works within one (1) year of this posting date. Completion of a professional driving course is considered an asset.

 

The ability to operate a Skid steer or a roller is a requirement for this position or the ability to be trained.

 

Knowledge of the National Safety Code; pre-trip inspection program; hydraulic systems; as well as mechanical aptitude and ability are considered assets. Previous experience operating trucks with salt and plow equipment, a Class I license, and knowledge of salt spreading systems are also considered assets.

 

You are a self-motivated individual who works both independently with minimal supervision, and participates fully as an effective team player. You are accurate in your work, and have well developed time management and organizational skills to meet established priorities. You consistently maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service.

 

You will be assessed on the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: practical driving test on a tandem truck, written examination, interview, and reference checks.

Working Conditions

 

You will be working in all types of weather conditions, environmental hazards, traffic conditions, occasional work performed in a mechanical environment occasioned by smoke and fumes. Expected to work in above normal noise, dust and vibrations.

Additional Information

 

This opportunity is for a special work crew as per Article 15 of the CUPE Collective Agreement.

 

You will begin your workday by reporting to your assigned work location in the Colchester Construction Area (Zones 14, 15 & 16). You will begin your workday by reporting to 15 St. David's Ave., Bible Hill before going to your assigned work location. The employer reserves the right to provide transportation to work sites with Department vehicles. It is the responsibility of every employee on the Special Work team to make their arrangements to report to the assigned work location. The employer reserves the right to provide transportation with Department vehicles.

 

There are three (3) positions based out of the Colchester Construction Area including Maintenance Zones 14, 15 and 16.

 

The Special Work Crew does not have a defined works period. The asphalt work will depend on available funding. It is anticipated that work will take place over the summer maintenance season in any given year depending on asphalt work plans/priorities and available funding. On days where inclement weather does not allow pavement patching, other maintenance duties will be assigned to the crew.

Pay Grade:  EQP OPER  

Salary Range:  $29.12 Hourly
