About Us

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is leading the transformation of the early years and public education system in Nova Scotia. We are doing this by designing an innovative curriculum, facilitating excellence in teaching and learning, ensuring an inclusive education experience, and working closely with our partners in education. This department is a perfect fit for those that want to be part of the future of early learning and childcare and public education in the province by supporting children, students and families with a strong foundation for success in a progressive and responsive policy environment.

About Our Opportunity

Nova Scotia’s early learning and childcare sector is entering a new phase—one defined by growth, innovation, and shared responsibility for quality, sustainability, and public value. To support this evolution, we are seeking a confident, forward-thinking leader to guide how public funding is stewarded, monitored, and strengthened across the sector.

As Director, Service Provider Funding, you will play a pivotal role in advancing a mature, resilient early learning and childcare system. You will lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for the design, management, and continuous improvement of funding frameworks that support service providers while safeguarding public investments.

This role goes beyond administration. You will work closely with providers, system partners, and colleagues across government to build shared understanding, strengthen sector capacity, and ensure funding approaches enable quality, accountability, and long-term sustainability.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for service provider funding frameworks aligned with sector needs and government priorities.
  • Oversee funding stewardship and oversight, including monitoring, analysis, evaluation, reporting, and continuous improvement.
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with service providers that promote shared accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with provincial, federal, and sector partners to strengthen system capacity and coherence.
  • Champion innovative, evidence-informed approaches to funding design and system oversight.
  • Guide and develop a multidisciplinary team and contribute to departmental executive leadership.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this opportunity, you hold a bachelor's degree in addition to substantial progressive experience in a leadership capacity.  You are a strategic and collaborative leader who thrives in complex, evolving environments. You balance accountability with partnership, and you understand that strong systems are built through trust, clarity, and shared responsibility.

You bring leadership experience, excellent relationship-building skills, and a systems perspective on public funding and service delivery.

In addition to the above, you are a highly organized individual who is focused on continuously improving quality and has a solution-focused approach. You are responsive and able to prioritize a high volume of competing and sometimes rapid requests.

As a skilled communicator, you possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as effective organizational skills. Education or experience in financial management, accounting, or a professional designation may be considered an asset, but is not required.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
