About Us

Building and maintaining the infrastructure that keeps our Province moving is a complex challenge.

The Environmental Services Team at the Department of Public Works plays a critical role in ensuring new and existing infrastructure in our Province is sustainably developed with minimal risk to our environment.

We are seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer—an experienced leader who brings both technical expertise and strong people leadership to the planning and delivery of complex infrastructure projects. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on how infrastructure is built and managed across the Province.

About Our Opportunity

Using your expertise, you will provide environmental engineering and design guidance to Department staff and partner government agencies. You will represent the Department on committees and multidisciplinary project teams, contributing to decisions that shape infrastructure across the Province.

You will work collaboratively across regions to address unique environmental challenges and support the achievement of departmental objectives.

Your strong project management, planning, and organizational skills will help ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. At the same time, your leadership and ability to motivate others will foster a high-performing team that consistently delivers strong results.

Primary Accountabilities

As the Senior Environmental Engineer, you will lead complex environmental initiatives, including the management of contaminated sites in accordance with provincial regulatory requirements. You will provide technical expertise on regulated building materials to support the decommissioning and renovation of provincial infrastructure, improve the environmental performance of operational facilities, and support highway maintenance and construction projects.

In this role, you will lead environmental assessments, screenings, and permitting activities, as required, for major infrastructure projects. You will also develop and maintain environmental design standards and policies that support the sustainable and compliant delivery of infrastructure across the Province.

In addition, you will coordinate research and analysis on environmental engineering technologies and practices as they relate to highway and infrastructure construction.

You will engage and manage external contractors and consultants, as needed, to support the successful delivery of environmental programs and projects, ensuring quality, compliance, and value for the Department.

You will provide technical leadership by mentoring staff, fostering a skilled and engaged workforce, and reviewing and approving technical reports and engineering drawings. You will also prepare briefings and provide strategic advice to senior leadership.

Qualifications and Experience

A Bachelor of Engineering and a minimum of six (6) years of related experience managing complex environmental risks associated with the construction, operation, and maintenance of provincial infrastructure is required. Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) and membership in good standing with Engineers Nova Scotia are also required.

Designation as a Site Professional, as defined under the Contaminated Sites Regulations, is considered an asset.

You must hold a valid driver’s license in good standing and be able to travel throughout the province.

You are comfortable working in both office and field environments and bring a strong knowledge of environmental regulations, industry standards, and safe work practices. You have demonstrated experience managing complex environmental projects and delivering results within established deadlines. Your project management skills enable you to lead effective and efficient programs.

You are analytical, resourceful, and solutions-focused. You manage priorities effectively, balancing timelines, budgets, and resources to achieve project objectives. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as you will work with a diverse range of stakeholders.

You will be assessed on the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, interview, and reference checks.
