About Our Opportunity

This position is responsible for supporting the administration of land surveying activities on Crown lands for the Survey Division of the Land Services Branch of the Department. The technician provides expertise and support for land transactions to all sections of the Land Services Branch, other government departments and private sector surveyors. This position supports the Manager of Crown Survey Administration by conducting technical reviews of field surveys and survey plan submissions, drafting plans, researching historical documentation, and compiling records for investigation purposes.

Primary Accountabilities

-Provides operational support for land transactions by researching, preparing, and reviewing plans for the disposal and/or acquisition of Crown lands. 
 
-Compiles/drafts various types of plans in support of land transactions such as leases, Crown grants; owner unknown acquisitions; certificates of release; and/or special leases, for review by the Manager. 
 
-Performs detailed survey plan examinations by reviewing the submissions and ensuring the guidelines for surveying Crown lands, the Nova Scotia Land Surveyors Act, and the Nova Scotia Land Surveyors Standards of Practice have been followed properly. 
 
-Drafts orders of survey, for Manager review, for the Department and for private land surveyors in accordance with instructions issued by the Crown Survey Administration Section of the Land Services Branch, which are to include instructions for surveying on Crown lands and any applicable relevant transactional information.
 
-Drafts long and short form legal descriptions, for Manager review, to accompany surveys, meeting submission requirements for Parcel Description Certification Applications (PDCAs) to the land registration system.
 
-Collaborates with other government departments to support the spatial delineation and development of the Department’s protected areas designations by identifying areas of designation, working with various stakeholders, and communicating stakeholder input to the Land Services branch.
 
-Performs comprehensive digital reviews of survey products and administers digital records of all relevant geo spatial information, to be approved by the Manager.
 
-Continuously maintains a high level of knowledge in the practice of land surveying, staying current with advancements in technology, departmental policy changes, amendments to the Lands Surveys Act and Regulations and surveying standards published by various surveying association such as the Association of Nova Scotia Land Surveyors.
